Hp pavillion zt 1170

My hp pavilion zt 1170 most times boots up with a black screen ( background light does not light up). On some occasion when it does boot up, it will go as far as the desktop display and then suddenly shut down suddenly.
Have tried re-seating the Ram chip and the hard drive to no avail. On one occasion when it booted up ran the diagnostics and the result says:
Error: Runtime protected Mode termination
Cause: 14: page fault
How should I proceed? Help.

Thanks to every one who sent in advice on solving my problem.

My problem is solved. Turned out that one set of my RAM was faulty, and when they were removed everything started working again, though a little slower than before. But it is working at least. Will upgrade RAM at a later date.

    Many thanks again.

I have also been having a similar problem for quite some time. My fater has had this laptop for years and since his warranty ended (ironically) the backlight on the monitor would turnout when you try to adjust the screen when the laptop is on. The computer is fine on a reeboot however. now that this laptop has been passed on to me, i was hoping to restore the laptop to factory settings however a new problem has arisen. the laptop will now intermittently shut off. it shut off on me once when trying to install windows and i havent been able to keep the thing on long enough to install windows since. hopefully it is just a faulty ram chip and that can be replaced but this is such an old laptop that might cost me a fortune just to find anyway. I thought it might have been a jammed fan or an overheating problem but my father too had suggested that the ram could be bad.

Hi,

I am pretty sure you have a corrupted operating system here, or have somehow gotten corrupted video drivers. Boot to safe mode and change the video drivers to Microsoft VGA Generic and reboot and see if that fixes it, If it does, you can experiment with installing updated drivers for that machine available on the HP web site.

Also run a disk check on all drives; sounds like you might have some data loss.

If this does not fix it, consider reinstalling the operating system and then patching it to the highest level possible.

If reinstalling the OS does not work, you might have hardware problems with the screen or motherboard, though this is pretty rare, and is a different matter to troubleshoot.

Good luck...

Hi,

I have been troubleshooting the same model computer for my father in law with the same problem. The problem is intermittent and sometimes the computer will work for hours but then will fail at post. I think when KLBK states it boots up with a black screen it may be that it doesn't post as well. I have put bootable cds in the drive and the whole computer is unresponsive with the black screen but all the buttons are lit.

I ran HD utils and Memtest without finding any issue but did find the computer starting working properly once I removed the stick of RAM in the slot on the underside of the computer. I have not had an issue in over a week since doing so.

When i power up my hp pavillion laptop the screen stays black and it beeps 3 times and does nothing

3 beeps is usually related to the memory.

Try re-seating / booting with just one stick of memory and see what happens.

My HP Pavillion DV6000 laptop starts up fine and after a few minutes the screen turns black. I can still see the desktop image in the background but barely. If I reboot the screen looks normal again but...

That means your backlight is going out. The fact that it's happening intermittently like that suggests that you have a faulty screen inverter (a small circuit behind the screen that converts DC power to AC, in order to light the florescent backlight).
I suggest replacing it. Here are some on abay for pretty cheap:

I have a dell inspiron 1545 which has caused me nothing but grief since my purchase in june09 a cousin has given me his old hp pavillion zt 1170. the dell has vista and the pavillion has xp which is the...

Considering the specs:
Pavillion zt1170:
Intel Mobile Pentium III-M processor (starting at 933 MHz) with SpeedStep technology. –or– Intel Celeron processor (starting at 866 MHz).
Inspiron 1545:
A minimum of an Intel® PentiumTM Dual Core

There is no comparison between the computers,.. Keep the dell and work out the issues or sell it and use the cash towards an inexpensive new unit.
I hope this helps
