They are under-exposed. Either open the aperture more, or use a slower shutter speed, but beware of camera shake.

Canon Digital Rebel autofocus problem (EOS 300 and 350)

Hi.

A number of complaints from Digital Rebel EOS owners reported that the auto focus feature suddenly stopped working. In some case the picture was showing a dark shadow on the lower side.

The problem is a factory defect caused by a factory defective autofocus sub mirror. The problem is known to most repairers ( and sadly to users ). Although the defect due to design problem, Canon never acknowledge that this is a factory defect, and never issued a recall and free repair notice for Digital Rebel defective autofocus.

THe repair is done replacing the mirror. The cost ranges between $120 and $180.

As first line of action, check any of the links below, and call Canon. Complain, and see if you can get discounted repair.

If that does not work, the alternatives are using the camera with no AF, or having the camera repaired at own expenses. Often the sub mirror may get even more stuck, and pictures start showing the black shadow from mirror on lower part of the picture.

This is the cause of your troubles:

Here one of several repair websites dealing with the problem. I quote:

"Most autofocus repairs are related to problems with the small mirror under the main mirror (known as the sub-mirror). There is a plastic post that operated this mirror which sometimes breaks. We replace this post with a brass pin so that the problem will not recur. "

Here one of the many forums on the problem. Please read the testimonial from other users, it is quite instructive.

Here how to do the repair.

Good luck.

I have a EOS Rebel XS camera with a 18-55mm lens. Every time I try to zoom in both lens and the picture are blurry. Am I just in the wrong settings?

make sure the lens is not in manual mode. on the side there is MF and AF make sure its in AF for auto focus. id its still looking nblurr in the viewfinder when pressing the shutter half way then user the smal wheel next to the viewfinder so the viewfinder is calibrated for your eye.

Canon EOS Rebel S taking bad pictures

Your camera has a faulty shutter or shutter timer.

Given that you can buy a perfectly good Rebel S for anywhere between £1 to £25 on Ebay it's not economical to repair it.

Digital rebel XS - flash delay

Your camera is set to syncronize the flash on the second shutter curtain. Check your custom functions/custom settings, and disable it. It's called "second curtain sync" or "2nd curtain sync". Nikon call it "Rear Sync".
Hope this helps,
/Chris

Dark pictures

Check whether the ISO rating set in the camera is correct. Also, if the images are grainy and dark, it may be an issue with the exposure.
