This may sound obvious but the backstory is when I first turned the washer on it overflowed. i shut everything off and about an hour later ran the cycle through and it worked fine . . . no flooding. 15 minutes after the cycle finished, water started flowing into the machine without my permission . . . the knob hadn't been set. I turned the water off and then on again and no matter how I turned the knob, the water would stop. Is this a duh? question or maybe I should try and see if it will run a regular cycle by letting the water run through.
Easy check for water filling problem like yours. Unplug the power and see if water still flows into machine. If yes----your inlet valve on the washer is stuck open and needs replaced. It is the part on the washer back where your fill hoses attach to. If the water is flowing into the machine while plugged in and it stops when unplugged, you have something in the control panel sending power to that inlet valve even when the machine is off. You would now need to find out where the power is coming from. If its an electronic control washer, the main board may need replaced.

You might have a partially clogged drain past your drain hose
(In the wall etc)
Thats overflowing behind the washer.
Watch the drain for a few washings and see if it overflows
It may be second or third or fifth load. Its hard to catch

Hi Thanks
for using FixYa. Overfilling in your washer occurs mainly due to two things:
water inlet valve going bad and/or the water level switch. If the water inlet
valve has gone bad it won’t be able to shut off even when the electricity has
been turned off. If the issue is with the water level switch then it won’t tell
the water to shut off and the machine will overflow as this switch is to sense
the water level in the clothes tub. However, with that being said it seems that
you’ll need to replace the water inlet valve. Please do rate the solution if
the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance. Thanks Rylee
The usual culprit for a washer that will not stop filling is the
pressure switch. The switch is located inside the operator console
behind the load size, or water level knob (this knob has different
names based on the washer model). Before assuming the pressure is
defective, however, inspect the pressure switch and ensure the small
plastic air hose is still attached to it. It is common for this small
air hose to come loose or develop small cracks or breaks. Without the
hose installed, the switch cannot detect the appropriate pressure in
the wash tub and will not shut off. The result: as washer that
continually fills and will overflow. What appears to be a significant
problem may only be a loose hose and few minutes of your time. Please
inspect the switch, check the entire length of the hose for cracks and
make sure the electrical connection(s) are intact and not corroded,
then get back to me. I hope this helps you.
PS Make sure you UNPLUG the washer before servicing!
That drain hose in front has a stopper, to prevent discharge. Either it is not there or not tight or something. You can always clog it shut with a round wood bit inserted or something........I don't think it is too difficult.
