Here is the answer to the Machine Error 46 (have just fixed my own MFC210C):

Machine Error 46 – Purged Ink Box Full MFC620CN/420CN/410CN/210C and FAX2440C

The machine counts all purge (cleaning) operations in order to prevent the internal ink absorber box from overflowing with purged ink. An “initial purge”, for example, advances the purge counter by 187 + 420 = 607. When the purge counter approaches 6400, an internal "Machine Error 46" is generated. Further purge operations are prohibited, and therefore the printer becomes unuseable.

When an internal Machine Error 46 is generated, the user will see an “Unable to Clean” external message and will be unable to use the printer. The “Unable to Clean” external message can relate to many different internal error codes however.

The user can establish the internal Machine Error Code as follows: pull the mains cable out of the machine (power off), hold down the Menu/Set key, re-insert the mains cable into the machine (power on). The internal Machine Error Code will be displayed.

If there is a Machine Error 46, it is necessary to dismantle the printer, replace the ink absorber box (or possibly break the ink absorber box open and clean its absorbent sponges under a tap), re-assemble the printer and reset the purge counter to zero.

Resetting purge counter MFC620CN/420CN/410CN/210C and FAX2440C

1) Enter machine maintenance mode (on MFC210C all four photo/copy/fax/scan lights flash in maintenance mode). Care is needed in maintenance mode, otherwise critical settings may be inadvertently corrupted.

FAX models with numerical keypads: Press the Menu/Set, *, 2, 8, 6 and 4 keys within two seconds. (if you fail to complete the correct key sequence within two seconds, press the Stop key to try again).

Other (non-FAX) models: Press the Menu/Set and Black Start keys. Next press the “up arrow” key four times to enter the maintenance mode).

2) Press the 8 then 0 keys in the initial stage of the maintenance mode to call up the machine's log information list (function code 80).

3) Press the Black Start key several times to scroll through the log information list to reach the purge counter. The purge counter is the 25th item in the list.

4) Press the 2, 7, 8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge count to zero.

5) Press the Stop/Exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.

6) Press the 9 key twice to return to the standby state.

Carry on printing !!

thanks.

I'm getting the error message Unable to print. check user guide on my brother mfc 210C all in one printer. I don't have my user guide. Please help. Tiare'

Unplug the printer from power cord.Press and hold the "menu" button, then plug the device. You'll see on the LCD screen a "machine error" code.If this code is 40,41,49 or 4F the print head is defective. If the error is 48 -defective print head cable or circuit board. If the error is 50 or 51 there is error in Purge unit and printer require service. If the error is 46 the waste ink tank is full.Follow this:
Enter 80, then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If number is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.This will reset the purge count value. Then restart the printer, hopefully without the annoying cannot clean message.

Unable to clean Error 46

Here's the instruction for ALL brother inkjet printers (mfc/dcp is equal) when printer shows unable to clean (error 46)

You need a new ink absorber box which can be purchased from a brother service partner near your home.
Search the brother homepage of your country:
www.brother.com (choose your country)

If you have got the spare part (ink absorber box) you have to open the printer:

http://www.hstt.net/refill-faq/inside.html#Brother_mfc215c
(use google for translation german)

Do NOT clean the old one! It cant be cleaned: The felt wont take up ink anymore and will stain the machine from inside and the furniture beneath the printer.

After replacing the eeprom of the printer needs reset:

(dcp: use arrow-up and set key to choose the digits. e.g. arrow-up til 8 then set arrow up til 0 then set
mfc: use the fax-number keys.
Stop-button will always go back to maintenance, if you have done wrong)

press menu then start bk-copy then fourtimes arrow up quickly after another.

machine will switch to maintenance mode and light(s) will flash.

press 8 0

press start bk-copy until PURGE 64xx

press 2 7 8 3

Purgecount will be 0000

Press stop

press 9 9 to leave the maintenance mode.

After the mfc/dcp comes up again in normal state the error has disappeared

You need to disassembly the printer and you will see waste ink tank on the rear side of the printer.Remove the tampons and wash it with hot water until they don't stop put blackness. Then assembly all again. If you ask how to reset ink counter search "error 46" in this forum.

Brother MFC 210C Machine error 41

Error 41 refers to the printheads which is a common problem with Brother machines. The printheads will need to be replaced. On some machines, Brother has extended the warranty to cover printheads because of the excessive failure rate. Contact Brother to see if you qualify and they may send you new printheads along with easy instructions to replace them. Also please rate this solution with a fixya rating. Thanks!

BROTHER MFC 210C INK ABSORBENT BOX

You can order the part directly from Brother ( ph # 1-800-284-4329).  The part is called an "Ink Absorber Box Assy" .  The part number is LF7544001 for a MFC-210C printer.  It cost about  $11 and shipping is about $5.   There is a website that has different diagrams for various brother printers.  You will also see  part numbers.
