My Gaggia Unica won't grind the coffee beans, it just whirs and stops making the drink

It was fine, then it's as if the beans aren't getting into the grinder, the beans I can see do move but don't go down into the grinding part.

More than likely the machine is stuffed with coffee grind. Need to take it apart and clean it. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQbP2v8C-sA

SOURCE: Grinder is slipping.

  1. take out bean container
  2. disassemble 3 philips screws and take plastic out
  3. rotate the knob to try to get out the upper holder of burr. if it does not rotate than disasemble the knob and the gears(plastic big one is attached to upper holder of grinder, the other is together with knob.
  4. tru to rotate it manualy, with help of extra srews puted in gear holder holes.
  5. when you get it out, carefuly clean it, look for metal parts and stones(wich sometime comes with coffee)
  1. turn on the grinder and attach gently one marker to lower burr during spining. after you stop grinder, look if it is perfect circle marked in burr. if it is not than marked side is higher. you should consider getting it ok by putting adhesive paper under lower burr and check it again.
good luck and carefuly.

SOURCE: how can I clean my Gaggia burr coffee grinder?

For parts you can see, use an artists paintbrush. If you want to clean the internals, grind some panko breadcrumbs or raw rice grains, then run some coffee through it a few times before using.

SOURCE: how do you change the grind on a gaggia coffee

if it is everything in order you change the grind buy rolling the plastic container of coffee beans(container commands to upper burr holder. If it doesn't go easy than disassemble container and unscrew the upper burr holder, carefully when it comes out, you have some pins and springs from below. do not loose or displace them.

Our Saeco Vienna Superautomatica sounds like it's grinding beans but keeps running until the red 'bean' light comes on and we have to shut the machine off. Any suggestions?

The grinder is timing out and stops if the beans do not enter the grinder. This happens because:
1- The grinder outlet is clogged and fresh beans cannot pass through the burrs.
2- The grind setting is too fine and helping clogging in the grinding chamber or the ground coffee outlet.
3- Operator may have been using dark roast oily beans. Like it or not, the dark roast oily beans do not make stronger espresso. Please stop using such beans in fully automatic espresso machines.
4- The grinder has already made over 2000 grinds and the burrs are blunted and not grinding beans as needed.
To solve this malfunction, clean the grinder. Make sure the grinder outlet to the doser is cleaned. This outlet passage is about 2 inches or more. To clean it, lay the machine on its back (water tank side) to allow better view of cleaning the doser and the passage of coffee from the grinder to the doser. Use the link below to find instructions for cleaning the grinder and replace the burrs.

The grind might be too fine, and so the machine extract the coffee, try making the grind a little coarser.

Will grind the coffee beans but no water passing

Either the grind is too fine or the brew unit is blocked at the screen.

Coffee beans empty but not

Could Be one of 2 things, the grind is set too fine and the beans are not getting to the millstones, or there is something blocking the chute for the grounds.

No cream on the espresso when dispensed

I was having this trouble with Lavazza beans and Morrisons (horrible) beans. I switched to Formula 6 from James' Gourmet Coffee on the internet and every cup has a great crema layer and good taste.
With the old beans I could get an occasional good cup, it seemed this was more of a problem if the machine had been switched on for a long time before making the cup. I use a Gaggia machine with a Gaggia MDF grinder on 8 or 9 setting, with the new beans I now get a great cup all the time so I'm going to try more the James' range!

Coffee Beans Empty - but the hopper is full!

Caffeind...the problem is likely still some bean remnants stuck in a switch which is causing the problem. Get some newspaper and open it up on a flat surface. Invert the grinder and give it a couple of thumps on the newspaper. The chips should loosen up and fix it. Remember, beans are both sharp in shape and oily in makeup...perfect for getting stuck.
