If it was working before you replaced the element, I would suggest that you have inadvertently knocked a wire off somewhere or trapped and cut through a wire. Have close look everywhere you were working.
Most cars have an interior light switch that works in conjunction with the dash panel light dimmer. When in it's extreme position, it turns on the interior light. Another possibility is a faulty door switch. I hope this helps you. Let me know.
Did you check the glass panel in the hatch was closed properly? I've inadvertently opened it (while trying to open the hatch) and forgot to close it properly, thus keeping the open door light on.
