When connecting my DCR-TRV510 to my computer using a firewire cable there is no sound. Is the firewire connection for video only? If so, what do I connect from the camera to my computer to also capture the sound?

Sony DCR-HC38E should have an interface called 1394, or the firewire.
so you need to use a FireWire cable to connect it to your computer's firewire interface,
some laptops have it built-in,
If you don't have one on your computer, you can either purchase a IEEE1394/FireWire adapter, which should be under 100 or even $50.
Connector Type1.0 x Composite video/audio output , 1.0 x S-Video output , 1.0 x USB , IEEE 1394 (FireWire/i.LINK)
4-pin to 4-pin IEEE 1394 iLink FireWire Cable dv out to laptop Connect and transfer home movie from your digital camcorder to Notebook computer.
You will need a Firewire port on your computer, also known as a DV port or IEEE 1394, to use this cable. This is NOT a USB cable.
This DV cable will connect your laptop (notebook) NOTE: for some models, becuase of no DV jack on the body, this cable connects to docking station/cradle instead of connecting directly to your camcorder.
The DCR-TRV22E Camcorder can be connected to the Macintosh Computer with the i.LINK (Firewire) cable. The Software supplied with the Camcorder is not compatible with the Macintosh Computer. Instead you've to use the Firewire cable for connecting the Camcorder to the Computer. You can use the iMovie Software for transferring the videos. You do not require any drivers from Sony, to transfer the video via i.LINK.
You require to purchase either a 4 - pin to 4 - pin or a 4 - pin to 6 - pin i.LINK / Firewire cable depending on the number of pins on the i.LINK / Firewire port of your computer (since Camcorder will have only 4PIN i-LINK, while the Computer may have a 4PIN or 6 PIN i.LINK port).

We wish you a happy Christmas and NewYear!!
All of pre-HDD cam does have FireWire port somewhere in it (or at the docking station in case of SONY's)
In
order to capture the footage from the cam to your PC,you need the
Firewire card and the cable.Should be available at any computer hardware
store. All you have to do is to install the card to your PC,connect your
cam to your computer via the cable, then capture the video by your
favorite video editing software.
Yes,that sounds a bit more
difficult than drag-and-drop work in USB-connection camera, but not too
difficult to understand,of course.

This is an image of FireWire check if this device has one that came with it , but if not you can get it to a electronic or computer store near you.
You need a FireWire cable and a computer with FireWire port. I have same camara - it comes with a base unit into which you have to plug in the camara. From that base unit connect the firewire cable (4pin) and take that to your computer which may have a firewire port (either 6pin or 4 pin) - depending on what kind of firewire port you have on the computer, you have to get appropriate cable ... it is my understanding that the camara doesn't come with this cable. I purchased a firewire cable with 4 pin connecter on both ends to connect to my IBM laptop with Vista on it. It works great after all this setups. It does not work with a USB cable for some reason.
