The mainspring is not bad or the carriage would not move that way. It sounds like and escapement problem either from the carriage release sticking, the escapement itself needing adj. which you probably cannot do, the escapement rack is bent or maladjusted, or the tab function is sticking or maladjusted. Check the carriage release levers to see if they are sticking. Also make sure the tab function is knocking off so the carriage is not in constant tab mode. Hope this helps.

Hi:
First find the margin release key and press it once. Then use the spacebar to move the carrier forward and reset the right margin. Or again use the margin release key by pressing it once and then press and hold the backspace key to move through where the left margin was and reset it at the point where you want it.

Sounds like the return lever arm is not putting enough pressure on the return clutch, or the clutch is slipping. The exp key uses the same clutch but the pressure comes from your finger. Theres no way you can fix this yourself. Get an IBM mechanic.
