I can't be for sure if these are auto set margins, but it sounds like they might be. If they are, first move the carriage as far to the right as you can. Hold the Left Margin Set (not Margin Release) lever as you move the carriage all the way to the left. Release the Margin Set Button or Lever. Now hold the Right Margin Set Button or Lever (not the Margin Release), and move the carriage all the way to the right while holding the Margin Set. Once the carriage is all the way to the right, release the Margin Set. Move the carriage to the place you want to set your left margin. Hit the Left Margin Set and then release. Move the carriage to where you want to set the right margin. Hit the Right Margin Set and release it. It gets confusing, but Margin Release does not set margins. Its sole purpose is only to bypass the margins. Hope this helps.

The tab cord is probably what broke. If it a string some 50# fish line will probably work.

Make sure the carriage lock switch isn't on (presuming it has one). A carriage lock switch prevents the carriage moving when in transit (say, inside its case). These switches are usually located on the right hand side of the carriage, slightly underneath.

You have the ribbon on wrong. The ribbon dosen't feed off the spool but take up onto the spool. install the ribbon so that the moving spool is taking up the ribbon.

At the top of the typewriter behind the platen (the big black rubber roller you roll the paper into) there is a scale with two push buttons on it. The buttons are the margins. The button on the right is the one stopping you. Push it down and slide it to the right to set your new stopping place...or all the way to the right to not have any margin at all.

The linespace selector lever is probably at zero 0
try moving it to 1 1 1/2 or 2. There is also a detent lever that releases the ratchet of the roller. You should feel a bumping when you move the roller wheel.

Lift the carriage cover. Take note of the position of the ribbon in the ribbon guide and squeeze the ribbon cartridge sides while pulling straight up. When installing the new ribbon cartridge, make sure to seat it properly with the ribbon captured in the ribbon guide. Close the carriage cover.
