Question about Royal Office Equipment & Supplies

2 Answers

My typewriter carriage doesn't move along as I type.

How do I get my typewriter (Royal Quiet De Luxe) to stop typing letters on top of each other? It works fine when I manually hold the carriage in place with one hand and type with the other, but when I don't do this, the carriage stays in one spot and types letters on top of each other. I thought it had something to do with the drawband but I *think* I have hooked it in the right place and there's still no change. What now?

Does the carriage move if you depress the tab key or space bar? Is there any pull on the draw band. Maybe the main spring is broken.

The peice of my typewriter that is supposed to move the paper tothe left as you type doesnt move?

It's either in the carriage lock position, just check if it's locked in place.
The other reason may be that the return spring has broken. Easy to replace & is repairable sometimes.

Quiet deluxe typewriter

This is called motion adjustment
I assume the "segment" or the type faces go up and down when you shift? otherwise the "platen" where paper goes goes up and down either way there are a bump stop that is adjustable. usually with a flat blade screwdriver and a 5/16" wrench. there will be a bump stop on each side that must be adjusted equally however only one may be loose causing the problem. but first you should check the linkage for bends or binds shift lock should hold it to the maximum against the stops. Shift Key Problem , Royal Quiet Deluxe

There is a carriage shifting screw on both sides of the typewriter. You will recognize this because it is a screw that has a big bump head with felt on it. It is being hit when you hit that shift lever. You will have to loosen the securing nut first before adjusting.

I have an old school "Royal Quiet Deluxe" typewriter; the carriage will not move when the letter keys are pressed or when the space bar is pressed but will move to back space or to slide the carriage back...

If there is tension on the carriage when you push it to the right, the spring is not broke or the cord..then the problem would be in the escapement area..you would need a repairman to do this. if the carriage is loose, no tension then the spring is either broke or the cord is off or broke.
Either way not something easy....

Margin settings

You have to hold the magic margin button down while you move the carriage all the way to the left, then release the margin button. Then repeat for thr right margin. Hold the right magic margin button down while moving the carriage all the way to the right, then release the margin button.
