Of course the warranty just ran out but when I turn on the machine, it says "Doc. Cover Open" (The cover is closed) and gets stuck and will not do anything until this message is cleared. Also, it seems to have to do with the document feeder because magically this is not working either all of a sudden. I have looked and there is nothing stuck or trapped in the document feeder. I am able to "trick" the machine to get it off the fax function and onto the copy function by pressing a little black plastic thing when I open the document cover in the upper left corner. But the feeder tray no longer works so if I need to copy or fax I have to fax one page at a time. Can anyone help? Confused and frustrated .....
The left hinge (as you face the front of the machine) is plastic, weak and stressed out.
I don't like the design so my quick fix was to remove the scanner top by undoing the
two screws locking it into the main body, and gently lifting it up. There is a cable attached DO NO STRESS OR TUG ON IT. Get a second person to help you and flip the top over enough to remove the 3 screws securing the left spring loaded hinge to the top. I just removed the two internal springs in the hinge, you can replace or leave off the white plastic spring end plungers (they are non functional without the spring).
Reverse assemble the hinge assembly (it will be in two pieces) and align the segments back to the original hinge formation. This part you gotta love - with the scanner top closed back in place and the broken hinge segments realigned I simply ran several layers of DUCT TAPE on to the top and down the back side of the body. This made a soft hinge that depending on where your hinge broke can pretty much keep it in alignment. And NO you will not be able to leave the scanner top hanging in the air while you position your work, one hand can do that job. I'm back in business!
Just wanted to say Thank You to all of you for helping. I had the same problem with my Brother MFC-8440.
At first, the feeder wasn't working. At the same time, getting message "Doc. Cover Open". I was ready to throw the thing out the window. I was wondering, "Where would I go to get this thing fixed, and how much would THAT cost?" I took all your advice, went to Vance Baldwin Electronics, bought the Brother LP2403001 HINGE ASSY L. Here's the direct link:

(no picture available)
I only paid $11.03 and $9.12 for shipping (I bought two). It was here in four days. It took me less then 5 mins to install. NOW IT's WORKING!
P.S. Bad design on Brother's part. Great product and service from Vance Baldwin Electronics (other places on the internet charging upwards of $29.95 for the same item).
Thanks again, you all saved me the price of a printer (and a lot of aggravation).
I had the same problem, found your site and all of your suggestions. I ordered the same left hinge assembly from Vance Baldwin Electronics
Part #LP2403001 for $11.03, shipping from FL to OK was $9.23 UPS, so less than $20 and my MFC-8440 is working again! I did have difficulty placing the screws without a second pair of hands so have someone help you hold the lid. Make sure you removed the set ***** from at least the back of the left hinge assembly so that you can remove the "case" that holds the springs and sticky white parts. (Yes, I am a girl) :-). My husband will be so suprised when he gets home and sees that it works now because it was on his honey do list this weekend. Also, make sure that you replace the set screws and clean the scanner appropriately before use. I really like this site, it saved me a lot of money this time. Take Care!
I had the same problem, and I just purchased a replacement hinge from Precision Roller. It's supposed to be easy enough to do, so we'll see soon enough. Anyway, for those interested, here is the link:
http://www.precisionroller.com/find/brother_dcp8025.htm
Just scroll down the page about a third of the way until you get to the "Left Hinge Assembly". Good luck!
Same problem, it turns out that the springs caused the plastic holders of the rod to give way. I removed the part, removed the springs, superglued the plastic holder pieces around the rod, and reassembled, with an extra pair of hands. It works fine now, except that the cover won't stay open, but who needs it anyway.
Now I can leisurely order the right part, but no hurry.
You need to order the jinge for the left side of the doc feeder. it is broken. in the mean time, under the hinger is sensor. tape the sensor down and you will be able to use the doc feeder. brother tech
We just had the same problem. The document feeder won't function without the tray laying flat (it depresses a black button on underside of lid). The actual problem though is the left hinge assembly. The precision roller website sells them for $25. Hope this helps.
I just had the same problem. I ordered hinge from Vancebaldwin, definitely the cheapest place. I could not find it on the site, but when I googled the part # vancebaldwin was the first hit.
While I am waiting on new part, I simply removed the left hinge and placed the doc feeder back in place. It works fine, just have to be careful if I want to place an item on the glass.
Does it bring installation instructions?
I'm having a same issue. Following this lead, I found broken hinge as well. I'll order the part today. Thank you so much, guys!
Aha Yes. Same problem but think I found the culprit. The spring loaded hinge for the document feeder that allows you to raise the lid has broken and allowing the lid to be out alignment, ie: it thinks the lid is open. Mine completely broke & I'm trying to find a local Brothers Authorized Service station that can order a part for me. Try www.Brothers.com & look for Authorized Service Centers.
Brother Laser Printers:
After replacing the drum unit, keep the front cover open (make sure the power is on). Press and hold the "GO" button until all four LED's are lit. Once the four LED's light up, close the front cover. Make sure the drum LED is off. The counter is reset!
Brother Fax Machines:
Open the front cover. Press the CLEAR/BACK button. Press 1, when the display shows accepted.

That was what I was doing too :)- problem is that I need to often fax or copy a stack of stuff so still trying to figure out how to fix it. But yes, you are correct, we are having the same exact issue. Perhaps I am leaning toward the feeder tray parts or replacing the feeder tray rollers, etc.
Not sure about price of document cover - still trying to decide what to replace - as person mentioned on Aug. 28th they said it is the spring load hinge for the document feeder. I think they are probably right!
So may go in their direction.
I had the same issue, found a company in Southern CA that sold it to me for 11.00 and 5.00 priority mail to ship. no fexex, UPS ets, just Priority mail.

Same problem
Left hinge is definitely shot.
I can make copies by pressing down in the right rear corner for now, but doc feeder doesn't work this way.
We need to feed documents through the top tray to scan for email purposes. When we hit "start", it feeds and then gets jammed. We noticed that the hinge is broken and therefore the cover will not stay down tight. Can we replace just the hinge?
I found this link/site by accident, but am so glad that I did. You are all very helpful. I started reading the problem, and was like "yeah, that's what mine is doing" and couldn't believe it. It took a second glance at the left hinge to realize that mine was broken also.
Thank you for taking the time to post this issue and the link to Vance Baldwin--both were a huge help. I am ordering today.

The hinge in the body that holds the pin in the cover is broken. Can I get a replacement hinge?
I just ran into the same issue with the left hinge with all the same symptoms. The hinge cracked and needs replacement. Does anyone know where to get a replacement part? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Brother MFC 8440 Document cover open
I have a Brother MFC 8420 but same issue. When I raise up the top the left hinge is still intact but looser than the right. I depressed that little black do-hicky near the left hinge and presto(!) the error message was gone. Thanks!
Brother MFC-8440 doc cover open
does any know the part codes for the two hinges close together on the left as you face the Brother MFC-8440 please
Out of the blue, one day I turned on my 8440 and got a loud beep and a "cover open" error message. The rear left corner of the lid was raised slightly as though the lid was sprung. Thinking the cover was raised a bit as you would do when copying a book or magazine, I pressed down on the cover and a piece of plastic on the hinge broke off allowing the stiff springs covered by plastic caps which are under the hinge to push the lid up even higher. (The springs and plastic cover caps are coated with a grease like lubricant) I simply removed the plastic caps from springs, then removed the springs from their wells and let the left rear of the lid rest on the surface. This seems to allow all functions to work and I do not get the "cover open" message. Also, I can use the feeder to copy and scan. There is entirely to much cheap plastic on this machine.
I found tha the left side hinge assembly of the doc feeder was boken and that was the cause of error message and doc feeder not working. Can anyone help where to find the Hinge assembly and directions to replace it? Thanks.
doc cover open. Feeder sprung at hinge and now won't work...have to copy one page at a time
I have the same doc cover error and jammed feeder. Thanks to everyone for all the great suggestions! Is it easy to replace the left hinge? I wasn't sure if the part came with instructions or if there was a step by step list of how to take the top apart to get to the hinge. Thanks!
I got some great help here and have replaced the Left Hinge, now however the document feeder is acknowledging the paper in the document feeder, but can't/wont pull the paper through the feeder.
Thanks for your help.
