System file corrupt and CD Drive doesn't work to run Install CD

Hi I have an Acer Aspire 3000 series laptop which has just recently broke down. When I turn it on it starts to boot up but very soon gets the error..."Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"
My only option is to shut down or re-start the computer. I've tried running it in safe mode and most recent sucessful restore point but I still get the same error. The advice that is given when the error comes up is to put the install disk into the cd drive and try to restore it
from there, I however have a problem. The CD drive doesn't work. when a cd is placed into the drive you can hear it start to wind up but it always seems to stumble, the CD drive tries to start again a few times before giving up.
Is there possibly something easily fixable in the CD drive that I can do myself or an alternative method to get into the system and repair the above file. The resources I have available are a usb flash drive, the use of a usb harddrive and the use of another laptop.
NOTE: purchasing any new hardware is not an option at present.
I appreciate any help given.
Regards,
John Curwood

First: Boot into safe mode on "bad" laptop...

Open a command window...
(start, run, "cmd.exe", <enter>)
At the command prompt, type:
"CHKDSK /F"
It will probably say something about cannot lock the volume, do you want me to schedule a disk check at next startup? Say yes and reboot...

2nd:

Does the other laptop work, and does it have a functioning CD drive?

Yes?

Copy the I386 directory of the XP install CD to the USB Hard Drive using the working laptop.

Then, boot "bad" laptop into safe mode.
Plug USB HDD into "bad lapttop", hope it is recognized and copy the I386 directory to the c:\ drive.
After the copy is complete, run

C:\i386\WINNT32.EXE

Choose upgrade if you wish, but I'd have the program replace the existing windows installation. Leave the HDD as is if asked, do NOT format it. This way, you can navigate around and find your "old" data on the HDD after Windows has finished installing.

Have your installation Key/Serial No. at the ready.

Iv tryed most things. my acer aspire 7520 laptop has lost the dvd/cd player from the device manager so it will not work it is connected and it starts up.but no picture or sound.

You need to reset the hi and lo filters for the device, as this is caused by a registry error or corruption
Close all open programs

Click on Start

Click Run

Type REGEDIT and press Enter

Vista doesn't come with the run command enabled so just type REGEDIT in the search bar above Start..

Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders to open them.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Control

Class

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
(looks like same file name for XP and Vista?)

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

Upper Filters
Lower Filters
Upper Filters.bak
Lower Filters.bak

Hi my acer is asking for boot device

hi there,
please make sure that there is no USB flashdrive connected on your computer and make sure that there is no cd in the drive.
It's saying that it cannot find a bootable device because the drive it's trying to boot from doesn't have any bootable file.
If there is no cd in the drive and no USB flashdrive is connected chances are that your operating system installed in the hard drive was corrupted and you may have to do a reinstallation.
Hope this helps!

Replace a cd/dvd drive on my Laptop

Not possible at all. To install XP or Vista again, you need a CD/DVD drive working. (or) Contact Aspire(or local technician) if they can ship a XP/Vista pre-installed Hard-disk.

Recovery cd for acer aspire 3000

The "NTLDR is missing" error can sometimes occur when the boot.ini file is corrupt or missing but in your case it sounds like the HardDrive is the problem.

Try the Following:
Start>Run>Type "Cmd" and enter>Type "dir c:" and enter>Type "chkdsk" and enter. Your computer might promote you to chkdsk later Press "Y" and restart you computer

The Acer Aspire series usually have a eRecovery manager than ables you to burn 2 recovery disk which you should have done when you first got the laptop. Since you haven't done that you'll have to buy new recovery CD/DVD
From:
http://www.user-guides.co.uk/asp/product.asp?product=1241&ph=search&keywords=Acer,Aspire,Recovery,CD&recor=1&SearchFor=any&PT_ID=100

OR you can try the following.

Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. Choose a restore point that goes back to before your NTLDR problem started.

Please Rate, Thanks.

CD/DVD

Hi,

Try uninstalling the drive in device manager and then reboot, windows will automatically detect it again and re-install the drivers again for you.
The drivers may have been corrupt, if this does not work then the firmware on the drive might be corrupt.

Let me know how you get on.

Good luck....!

Acer Aspire 5110

Does your computer make the beeping sounds on boot up. If so, this means that a drive is corrupt and it's not loading the system driver files or is not seeing your hardware to boot up..

Are you running windows xp?

Have you tried running a system repair using your windows xp cd?
That works by putting in your xp cd...booting to the cd....the first window you come too will ask you the basic, agree to terms, press f8 to agree...then to the next screen.

There it will have 2 options...install a fresh copy of windows
Repair a version of windows...choose repair

Allow the repair to finish...and restart....if the repair was successful, your computer will restart normally...

Let me know if this works.....and how many beeps you are getting
