My MS Windows Professional computer(version 5.1.2600 service pack.Build - 2600) is slow on all fronts.Need ABSOLUTELY FREE fixing, subsequent to a free scan. All offers on the web are for free scans.But...

The BEST solution is to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows and your applications.

The easiest would be to run an anti-virus & malware program. AVG is a decent free anti-virus scanner. Programs like MalwareBytes Anti-Malware & Spybot are decent at trying to remove malware/rootkit infestations.

However, the simplest and most effective solution is to start over from a clean slate.

Win 32 application error

Hello bigk157,

This may be happening due to a virus infection. Do a search for win32 virus on Google and you'll see what I mean. Try downloading a program like Malware Byte's Anti-Malware or Super Anti-Spyware and running a FULL (not quick scan, have some patience as it may take a while) scan on your computer. Follow prompts and remove infected files. You may end up removing an important win32 file windows needs to run, but since its been compromised you'll have to delete it. You can restore it and other system files by doing a "Repair Install" from your Windows Installation disc. You can find instructions on how to perform a Repair Install by searching on Google.

Note: Not a "Recovery Console" repair by pressing "R" before continuing with windows installation. Sometime these two things get confused for one another.

Hope this helps, if so leave me some positive feedback. Thank you.

I have Pest Patrol and have malware with Winpc Defender

Try another program. Try Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Spybots-Search and Destroy. Both are free and work great.
-- Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a high performance anti-malware application that thoroughly removes even the most advanced malware and spyware.
--Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spybots also runs at start up and catches any program trying to make changes to your system registry.

Appcrashes

The problem is cause by an application called webshots which downloads images and automatically updates you desktop.

While this pacakage is not itself malware there are several pieces of malware which masquerade as webshots.

First I would suggest checking Add/Remove programs in control panel to see if you can remove it and then you need to install an upto date version of anti-virus and anti spy-ware software to check your not infected with some nasty.

Please let me know if you need any further help.

Regards

Nick

I can't get files to come up

Hi, Based on your post/description, it would seem that most of your document/aaplication file associations have been moved over to notepad. This is only possible if: 1. Somehow you have lost/deleted your word processing application and all others; 2. Virus/malware infection which changed file association; 3. Registry change/fault; 4. System/Application files corrupted. Actions you can try: a. Scan your system for virus/malware b. Apply/follow Microsoft's recommended repair/changing of file association in c. Repair/Modify/Reinstall all your applications d. Worst case scenario is you may have to reinstall your OS and of course thereafter all your applications. Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turn up or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.
