My washing machine makes a loud banging noise when spinning. The faster the spin the louder it bangs. I am pretty handy with tools but not familiar with appliance repair. I took the top off to see if I could try and figure out the problem. When I spin the inside drum it seems like it is bent or off some sort of track. When it hits a certain point in its rotation its really loose or wobbly. Does anyone have any ideas? If so could you walk me through how to repair it cause times are tight right now and if I could do it myself and save a few bucks I sure need too? Thanks in advance!!

Several possibilities for noise. check concrete balance wieghts at top and bottom of washer, make sure they are not loose.
Check drum restraint spring(s) are not broken.
Check suspension legs for wear.
Check for loose motor fixings.
Finally, remove drum belt, and spin drum by hand, tjhere should be noise from bearings, if it feels rough or is rumbling , then main bearings have failed.
Please rate my comments.
Thanks.

helzie, sounds like your drive block stripped out. You would get this from the top. You would need to remove the tub ring, agitator, lock nut and pull the basket from the tub. I will attach some pictures so you can visually inspect it. The part is cheap, part number 389140, but you can expect to pay around 140.00 labor. Check out the pics, you will see that the spin tube has 2 ears that sit in the drive block slots. See if your is stripped out.

I have a Kenmore which is the same as the Whirlpool. I dismantled the unit, it was only 3 years as Sears stated its was not under warranty. Upon review the stainless steel tub tripod assembly which is connected to the flywheel was cracked in three places which caused the knocking and vibration. Even though the warranty states lifetime on the Stainless steel drum, there is a ploy on words as the failure was not the stainless steel, so these machines are good for the scrap heap as the cost to replace the parts is more expensive than a new washer.

i have the same problem as urs. i open the whole drum myself and replaced the rear bearing. but the actual problem is the bearing housing is loose in plastic drum. so only drum needs to be replaced.
Hi,
When my washer did that, I found that the shocks that hold the tub were bad...
Check out this tip I wrote about the noise and vibration that front load washers can make..
