Bissell proheat 1698 reassembly, smart mix piston, new pump?

My bissell proheat was not dispensing shampoo and the water was only coming out of one side. I found a clogged spray hose. I'm not sure about the dispensing of shampoo. I just how to get the thing back together, to use the water only option.
I have tried to reassemble the unit. I'm unable to get the cover to sit flatly on the unit to screw it back down. I think the hang up has something to do with the smart mix and piston.

I just finished fixing a few minor problems I am having problems getting the unit back together. It seems to be the piston for the smartmix. I can not get it to attatch to the knob which is then keeping the unit from screwing back together flush.

How to use

first take the large tank out open the top of it and place hot water in the small round opening, than put the lid back on and set the tank firmly back in place, then take the small shampoo resivour and fill that with only genuine bissell shampoo ( if you dont it could ruin the machine !!!! ) then theres a small knob near the small tank adjust that to regular or heavy traffic if its really bad.

1698 bissell cleaner

Check to see if you get water from the hand held nozzle if so you have a clogged heater. If you get nothing at neither the floor or hose check the belt on the right side of the machine there is a cover that you need to remove it runs the pump and may be stretched out or broken. Also check the solution tank if it is not sealed properly you won't get any water either. For parts cleaning solution or questions visit www.stevessewandvac.com.

Troubleshooting for Bissell proheat

Does water squirt out of the hose nozzle, if it does, then check the heater inside the handle asm. Make sure that where the tubes hook up to it are not clogged. If water doesn't squirt, check for the seal at the bottom of the tank, it needs to be on the tank, not in the hole, this is for the soap bottle, there is a seal on the bottom of it as well. The flow indictor cap is leaking air or maybe is too tight. If you had the top cover off, make sure that the tubes are routed right so as not to get pinched when the cover is put back on, the smart mix knob should be in the water setting and that the piston is on the bottom of the smart mix knob. Pump is bad. Try running a mix of vinegar and water to see if that unclogs the lines. Is the top cover and the base tight together in the back, sometimes the top breaks loose and it will raise up and it can't spray, just re-fasten it down.
