do you happen to know the cost of a new compressor compared to a new fridge? would it be smarter to replace the compressor and if so is that easy to do?

Could be the Start device relay. Might not be the compressor as others have said. The start device is a $50 fix. Remove it and shake it. If it rattles, it's broken.

You have a bad compressor that is the only thing that will make something smoke and not let anything stay cool

The price of a new compressor is about 250 dollars plus tech cost. You cannot do it yourself do to the Freon inside the unit. The best option is for you to buy a new refrigerator also to be safe that it does not happen again

The fridge make weird noises some days. Cooling is good, freezer also works well. My concern is if those noises are prelude to a major damage.

This really depends on the type of noise. If you hear a gurgle type noise while running this is usually normal from the refrigerant pumping through the tubing. Fan type noise blowing air in the freezer section is also normal but if it sounds link the fan is rubbing or grinding you need to look into that noise. Also a similar fan down near the compressor area in the lower back section. A low hum from the compressor while running is normal. If you have and icemaker--water running noise about once per hour for around 10 seconds is all normal while the icemaker is filling. Dropping noise from the cubes falling into the bucket is also normal about once per hour. Hope this helps.

Side by side GE turbo-cool Gss25XSRBSS, the freezer seems to be fine, the fridge is not cooling. Fans seem to be running smoothly, no weird noises. Turbo cool turns on. It hasn't been running for

if you go here you can see the damper, fan assy. that's in the top of your machine in the fresh food side
http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Damper/WR49X10091/1055112
this is a damper with another fan in it,when the t-stat calls for cold air the damper door opens to let the cold air in from the freezer and the fan in it blows the cold air around inside the fridge,if the freezer is fine and the fridge side is warm most likely this is your problem, part number WR49X10091 and it's around 130 dollars.unplug the machine, remove the light cover on the ceiling, remove the 1/4 inch screws and drop the light assy.remove thhe filter cover on the right side so you can remove the damper assy.pop off the cover on the piece that runs up the back center, remove the screws to the damper, read the instructions and put it back together again.should take you around 45 to 60 minutes.hope this helps and good luck.

Freezer not freezing and fridge not cooling

Check the back wall of the freezer for ice buildup.
If yes, a defrost parts problem.
Check the freezer fan. Is it running?
If no, replace the freezer fan.
Check the condenser fan at the compressor. Is it running?
If no, is compressor hot?
If compressor is hot replace condenser fan motor.
If compressor is not hot.
Replace the compressor start relay.

No the fan must stay or your Fridge will not cool, I hear this same problem from a lot of people that have new Fridges. all new fridges are louder that the older ones, check to see what setting you have your control set at. Try turning it down to 3 or B this will make it run less. other than that, if it is cooling ok. then that is just the way it is. I hope this helps

Maytag fridge made some clicking noises and then stopped cooling

For what it is worth. I had this problem twice and both times the compressor ad to be replaced. Ton this day it sounds like a pin pong game whenever it runs. No it is not the fans or the ice maker.
