Make sure that the hold/lock switch isn't engaged, and make sure it has been plugged into the computer for 3-4 hours to fully charge.
If it still won't work, run a Repair in the Philips Device Manager.

It really depends on the gift card in question. If it is a Wal-Mart gift card (as an example), you can take it into any Wal-Mart store and the cashier can check the balance at the till. If it is a pre-paid credit card, they have a website on back of the card for you to check balances. Most store-based gift cards (Wal-Mart, Target, etc) you generally have to check in store, and most company based gift cards (such as steam, battle.net, etc) are applied to an account and rendered empty afterwards.
Gift cards are generally checked at the business they relate to (EG; a Wal-Mart gift card is checked at the tills in any Wal-Mart, just ask a cashier).
Best thing is to take it to a Wallmart , I'm pretty sure they will replace it for you. Hopefully you still have the packaging, you don't need the receipt for an exchange. Good luck.
I think the manufacturer just replaces it. If it was purchased at wal-mart and they can not swap it out, then I would suspect a Wal-Mart gift card is in your future.
given gift GC-822 MP3 player don't know how to use it, I have Vista will it work. Where and how do I record music. It seems to be permanently on sleep when plugged into usb port on computer what's up with that?
The manufacturer of the unit went out of business in November of 2007. Wal Mart was aware of it at the time and continue to sell the units. As a result Wal Mart is exchanging the item for one of equal or lesser value.
I know this isn't a very technical solution, but since you just bought it last night, I would take it back to Wal-Mart and exchange it for another one and see if you have any more luck with the new one.
