After installing a new print cartridge, the carraige is stuck and now, won't slide across so I keep getting an error about the jam and the carraige makes a bunch of noise trying to move. I've jiggled it but can't seem to get it to work again. Any ideas? Thanks alot.
I had the same problem and just got it to work. go to

go to the section "Moving the carriage" turn on printer and then unplug power. If you still cant move the carrage then remove both toner cartridge and all the trays. Then completely disconnect printer and stand it upright (so paper feed and cartridge tray is on top) Look thru the paper feed area to the left side of toner carrage and you will see a little plastic tab around the bottom back of the carrage. That tab is suppose to be inside a track on the bottom of the carrage. I think that when we put in or took out toner we must have pushed it to hard and that piece jumped out of the track and has "locked" the carrage. I just pushed the carrage up carefully and used a letter opener to move the plastic tab back into place (tab is spring loaded) print working fine now. Hope this solves your problem
Hi SunriseFlower. I know it's been a few years since you posted the solution above. However, I am also having trouble with a little black piece that is supposed to slide into the left side of the carriage cradle on my officejet j5780. I think we are referring to the same little piece. It was hooked to spring, and I could not tell where the other end of the spring was located. While I was trying to jiggle this little plastic piece, I accidentally disconnected the spring, and it flew into the empty space around the "service center". It seemed like this piece was not adjusting into place in order to keep the carriage docked, and then releasing, to allow the carriage to move out of the service station, when ready to print. Before I can continue my pursuit of whether this is the cause of my carriage jamming, I need to re-attach the spring. But I don't know what this piece is called so I can not really search google for directions of where to connect the other end of the spring. Without the spring attached, it definitely will maintain a carriage jam, because it's not being moved gently from one position to the other. It's just staying in one place, and blocking the carriage from moving altogether. If you can figure out what this piece officially does, or what it's called, I would be very appreciative!
