Nothing wrong with set--setting most likely the speakers in the set were switched to off-----check audio settings looking for speaker on/off setting or internal/external speaker settings.

No remote and the child lock is on. Can't play dvds and we have no kids.

Get a universal remote and program it for your TV and other devices. Then go into settings and change the child guard setting.

I have had the Kenwood VR-407 since 2001. I also have a Mitsubishi projection TV, attached to the receiver. When watching regular cable TV (u-verse), I can not get sound from the rear speakers. I am using...

Most TV stations you watch don't send a surround sound mix so you won't get anything in the back speakers. DVDs generally all have a surround mix which is why it sends to all speakers. What you are experiencing is normal, Bob.

Watching T.V. with speakers

Component 1 on the TV is probably an input, not an audio output. You need to find out if your TV has audio output jacks.
If I'm mistaken, and you are using audio output jacks from the TV, then you just need to press FUNCTION on your remote until the LCD display says "TV/VCR".

Setting up receive set top box and tv for surround sound

Plug the TV to an open channel on your receiver via this output:
*Rear, 1 x Digital audio output (coaxial) ( TOSLINK )
This will look like a single RCA output plug.
Set that input channel on your receiver to some sort of virtual surround mode because it doesn't look like your HDTV has a decoder in it (meaning it will come out stereo and the receiver will have to fake it).
Turn the volume all the way down on the TV and use the receiver to control TV volume just as you do with DVDs.

*Substitute this with the digital audio output on your set top box if you are sending video only to the TV from the set top box (component, DVI or s-video connections). So video goes to the TV, audio to the receiver.

Samsung HT-THX25

I guess you connected your TV set to THX25 through the AUX input jacks. If yes, then try to set the sound system to 5.1, not for STEREO (default) setting.
This should solve your problem (it sure solved mine). If the sound received from your TV set is not stereo, then you'll hear only mono.
