When I try to snap the battery cover door onto the back as per the instructions inside the cover, the metal wire does not catch the little hooks on the back of the phone, and the battery door cover won't stay closed. My son's phone, purchased at the same time, has the same problem. I tried purchasing a new battery cover door, but that did not fix the problem. Any ideas?
I am afraid the phones didn't start having this problem until they were out of the 1-year warranty period, so I don't think the phones will be replaced under the warranty. Any other ideas?

Try fresh batteries. Check for corrosion from leaking batteries on contacts and where battery compartment snaps onto battery door. Clean corrosion if there. If you do not measure over 6 volts at the two metal contacts on the door, then this is probably the problem (very common). Otherwise, failure of motor, loose screw in transport gearing unit on top
If the door will not stay closed it is the spring inside door, or the small plastic piece that holds the spring which is attached to the $80.00 piece called outer door.
To fix it, it is EASY and you do not have to even take the inside cover all the way off. Just remove the three sides of cover by gently slipping a plastic putty knife around rim to release the clips. Then attach the spring to the small hole below where the plastic piece used to be, which is located in the metal on the glass frame piece, use tweezers, hold the other end of spring as you place spring onto plastic door latch and set into place!
Snap the inside cover back on and YAY! FINI!
If it has the "double hook" type latch on the door, see if the hooks slide up and down. They should be spring loaded,if not,the spring attachment point inside the door may have broken off(my Sharp Carousel did this).I pryed the plastic door trim loose, and reattached the spring by using one of the slots inside to hold a metal wire clip(modified with needle-nose pliers) to hook the spring onto.Your door's design may be a little different, but a similar solution will probably be apparent after you get in there.

You should see about getting a new back cover. Try ebay, they run only a few dollars.
It sounds like you battery is coming loose a bit. Without the back cover snapped in tightly, there is a bit of room for movement for the battery. so when you snap it closed, the battery pops up of the contacts. If you know any one else that has a razor, try their cover to make sure.
