If it happens for only one particular disk:
Bring that disk to a game store like Gamestop or Rock30 Games and have them professionally clean the disk for a couple bucks.

If it happens for all disks:
Clean the cd/dvd with a laser lens cleaning kit. If that doesn't fix it then the cd/dvd drive will need to be replaced.

Dvd reading error

Try using a known-good (for instance, a movie you just watched on your TV). If it doesn't read that disc, make certain you have seated the disk in the drive properly (Laptop drives have a *CLICK!* when you have seated the disc properly). If that doesn't work- if the laptop is in warranty, get it fixed. If not, use an external drive to fulfill your media needs

Dvd/cd rom can't read dvd

Sometimes you just need to clean the disk or the dvd head on your player. If this doesn't work the disk is of the incorrect format.

My Dell optiplex 740 DVD/CD Rom drive does not read any disks.

You likely have a dirty or malfunctioning laser in your DVD drive. You can try cleaning the laser with a cleaning kit or open up the DVD drive and clean it manually with Isopropyl Alcohol. There is also a chance that drive motor is failing or the drive belt is stretched (Drive will likely make noise if this is the case). Parts can be sourced on eBay if necessary.

In my opinion. Just ditch the drive and buy a new one. It will cost $20-$30 and take 15-20 minutes to install. You could spend hours attempting to repair it and there is no guarantee you will be successful. These things are basically disposable now. If you want to open it up first then by all means give it a shot. You have nothing to lose because it already doesn't work and you'll at least learn something new.

Try cleaning the lens with a kit or alcohol and a cotton swab first. If that doesn't work, just buy a new one. It's much easier and possibly cheaper too.

How can I get my dvd to copy videos when it reads, No Disk? when there's a disk in the player?

hi, possible problem with the dvd, the lens doesn't read the disc or the spindle motor not rotating that is why can not read a disc. try to clean first with a cd lens cleaner, just insert a cleaner to the player to remove dirt and might the lens get sticky. now if still doesn't work, you will need to remove the cover of the player to access the internal part. check for broken part or any obstacle that can block the rotation of the spindle motor.if the motor doesn't rotate anymore you can check the resistance if still there using an analog tester. if no resistance at the pin terminal of the motor, the coil was worn out then you will need to replace the motor.

My cd and dvd player is not working. i have a toshiba laptop with windows vista. please advise. thank you.

If by not working you mean that the drive physically works fine, will eject and stays closed when you put a disk in, but does not read the disk or gives errors when it tries, then a simple cleaning could be enough to revive it. A lens cleaning cd is easy enough to find at any local department store and running this in the drive should take care of any problems reading disks unless the disks themselves are damaged.

If however you meant that the drive doesn't respond to eject requests, either when pressing the button, or choosing "eject" in windows, then the hardware itself is at fault and will need to be replaced. The drive is easy to swap out with a replacement or you could even get a portable external drive and only connect it when you actually need to use the disk. Also if the cleaning suggested above doesn't help, and you are sure the disks you are trying are not dirty or scratched to heavily on the bottom, then a replacement drive would also be in order.

My CD/DVD drive is not reading Rosetta Stone - Espanol Edition. It stars and spins, but then stops. OS: Vista SP2 Disk Drive: Unknown RAM: 3 GB - DDR2

Try playing a music CD to see if it works. Then try playing a DVD ( a DVD movie ) and see if that works. If the CD works and the DVD doesn't then your CD/DVD drive is probably the problem and needs to be replaced.

Have panasonic dmr-ez485v error message -NO READ- changed disks used prerecorded movie same as my recorded disks, hit reset - still no change

I just saw the date on this message and realize that it was awhile ago. I assume that you have dealt with it by now... So for others who are trying to fix their DVD player:

I have a DMR-EZ485V DVD player and just started getting the error message "No Read." I couldn't find an answer on the internet and finally called Panasonic's customer service, (there is no charge 1.800.211.7262). Since it says "No Read" to everything--store-bought DVDs, burned DVDs, CDs; AND when there is nothing in there (it acts like it is trying to read when the tray is empty), the customer service rep thinks that I am having a lens issue. It either needs to be cleaned (can pick-up a product at Best Buy or Radio Shack) or, if that doesn't work, the lens needs to be replaced.

Reads all but DVD-Help PLEASE

When you say it won?t read are you trying to play commercial DVD movies or read DVD data disks? If you're trying to play movies then you need a couple of things the first being some type of player program. Real player works as does Windows media player but usually DVD drives come with a striped down version of PowerDVD or WinDVD. If you in fact have a player installed and when a DVD is inserted in your drive it doesn't play it may not be configured to automatically play DVDs. Try opening your player program and trying to manually play your DVD. Let us know if you have any success or if you need more assisted. If you do let us know what player program and operating system you have and any error messages that may appear.
