This error is usually caused by a bad formatter
board.
But try the following:
1. Press CANCEL JOB to clear the print job from
the printer memory. 2. Turn the printer off, and then turn the printer
on. 3. Try printing a job from a different software application. If
the job prints, go back to the first application and try printing
a different file. (If the message only appears with a certain software application or print job, contact the software vendor for assistance.)
4. If the message persists with different software applications and
print jobs, disconnect all cables to the printer that connect it to
the network or printer. 5. Turn the printer off. 6. Remove all memory
DIMMs or third-party DIMMs from the printer. (Do not remove the firmware
DIMM in the lowest DIMM slot.) 7. Remove all EIO devices from the
printer. 8. Turn the printer on. 9. If the error no longer exists,
install each DIMM and EIO device one at a time, making sure to turn
the printer off and back on as you install each device. 10. Replace
a DIMM or EIO device if you determine that it causes the error. 11.
Remember to reconnect all cables that connect the printer to the network
or computer. 12. If the error persists, replace the firmware DIMM.
13. Replace the formatter.

Well I was having the same problem. I cleaned out the queue by canceling the job that it was having the problem with. Turns out the data being sent to the printer was corrupt in this case.

From the Service Manual:
49.XXXXX ERROR
alternates with
To continue turn off then on
A critical firmware error has occurred that
caused the processor on the formatter to
abort operation. This type of error can be
caused by invalid print commands, corrupt
data, or invalid operations. In some cases,
electrical noise in the cable can corrupt data
during transmission to the printer. Other
causes include poor-quality parallel cable,
poor connections, or home-grown programs.
On rare occasions, the formatter is at fault
which typically appears as a 79 Service Error.
NOTE If the error message
only appears when using
certain software programs,
contact the software program
vendor for assistance.

This error is typically due to some sort of data corruption. If this is happening on a single file, it could be that file. It could also be related to the individual software sending the print job, bad print commands or invalid. Although rare, a bad cable or connection can be to blame.
First step is to restart the printer, clear all jobs with the Stop button, restart printer again. Then try printing from another program, such as txt editor. If ok, then print a different file from original software, if ok, then print original file.
If failure is with final print, the file is corrupted for printing, recreate file.
If failure is with original software see if there is any updates.
If failure is there directly after restart, try updating printer driver (this is not be a bad idea anyways).
If none of this works, it may well be a formatter board issue, requiring technical service.

This is what the result for that error code is:-
ERROR 49.XXXX
A critical firmware error has occurred that caused the processor on the formatter to abort the operation. This type of error can be caused by invalid print commands, corrupt data, or invalid operations. In some instances, electrical noise in the cable can corrupt data during transmission to the printer. Other causes include poor quality parallel cables, poor connections, or specific software programs. Remove all EIO devices and firmware DIMM if installed. Restart printer. If error is gone replace each EIO device until error appears. Replace device which triggers error. May also be formatter.
Firmware updates are available for some machines at http://hp.com and clicking on the drivers and software tab. Also try printing from a different application. If that works go back to the first application and try printing a different file to determine if the problem is file related. You may need to reseat the memory DIMM's or replace the firmware DIMM or formatter board.
