Compressor not starting

I have a Amana refrig. bottom freezer model DRB1901C. It is located in the garage western NY.(current temperature low -mid 30's) I noticed yesterday the freezer was open slightly. Opened door and saw ice crystals, it seems evident compressor running for extended period of time. I shut it off and came back later, does not start up. I then place a haligon light at compressor and at entrance to freezer to warm up. Tested thermistat and it is ok. I'm looking for some advise on what to check out next. Does the compressor have a resettable overload? the refrig is approx. 3 years old (I think) I bought it last summer and it's in new condition, until yesterday...
Thankyou for any advice...Tom

Thankyou for the response. I tested the thermostat in the freezer. It has the on/off control for appliance. The refrig section was most likely at around ambient temp.(32F) but shouldn't the freezer section continue to operate the compressor to maintain 0-2 degree F in freezer?

The thermostat is in the fridge and fridge runs at about +4-6degC. if temp in the garage is about that value, appliance will not want to turn on

My DRB1901C is not freezing. It's sounds like its trying to kick over for a few seconds then fails.

If neither cooler or freezer is working it sounds like the compressor is locked up. When that happens it tries to start and will hold the start capacitor in until it overheats the safety contacts. It will overheat in about 3 seconds and then kick out. This happens sometimes if the door is opened right after the compressor has turned off because it is cold enough in the cooler/freezer. However if this continues time after time and the compressor does not start, you probably need a new compressor. You may consider a new refrigerator, since compressor changeouts are fairly expensive.

Where is the defrost timer

Should be down in front behind the kick panel.... If not then it will be in the compressor compartment.

Refrig and freezer not getting cold

HI, Can you hear the compressor running? Does it click like something is trying to start but can't? It sounds like the compressor is not running. The compressor should have a 5 year warranty. They are having problems with these compressors so, you might want to call Amana and see if it is under warranty. I hope this gives you some help. Please let me know if I can assist you further.
Thanks

I have an Amana bottom freezer, model BX20S5E that is not cooling properly in either compartment. I have replaced both the defrost thermostat and defrost timer (new). Still no change... what I do notice is...

check door gaskets and see if problem is moisture,or air gate to fridge compartment not working properly.I would recomend verifying defrost cycle is working by turing defrost timer to defrost cycle,it will click when engaged when unit is frozen and heater should come on if all is well,if not heater is probably culpret if the rest is new.

Where is the water filter in the bottom freezer amana energy saver model refrigerator; and how do you change it?

according to the model number that you gave this particular unit does not have a filter built into it. most amana bottom freezers ahve the filter located in the refrig section on the ceiling. there is a thumb latch you push in and a cover lets down to expose the filter. then turn 1/4 turn counterlokwise to remove. if this doesnt sound right post back wiht a complete model number from the refrig and I will take another look for you. thanks for using FixYa peyton
