If you’re looking for outside diameter(O.D.) you can always use a piece of string(a shoestring is great, even a belt or piece of paper is perfectly fine).
1. Wrap the string(or similar) around the pipe musing sure to note the point at which the two sides intersect, cross, or overlap.
2. Measure the length of string or similar item used to obtain the measurement needed for step 3.
3. Almost Done: Take your Measurment and divide it by 3.14. For Example, a 1/2” Pipe measures about 2.7” around but it’s Outside Diamter is .840” or slightly over 3/4”. Most pipes say the size on the pipe itself so you may look and save a little headache, but this will work out for you. If you’re not into plumbing so much as most of the population isn’t- get a “Shark Bite” or similarly designed fitting to join the pipe together at all joints so 2 for replacing one piece but measure twice and cut once- if you’ve got to cut twice mxke sure it’s only from cutting it too long originally, that’s a simple fix but you can’t add anything once it’s cut only 1/16” too short. These locking connectors are easy for pros or first timers, they’re a little forgiving but 1/20” too short is still just that, “too short”. Good Luck! See Diagrams below as they may be helpful!
