I have fixed an LG 42LH3000 with this very problem. Large TVs have a tendency to flex and bend ever so slightly when being moved or through heat, this can affect the connection of the ribbon cables at the top of the screen - either at the end where the Tcon board is or where the screen driver board is. When one end of the cable loses contact, half the picture goes (there are two ribbon cables. one for each side of the screen).
Remove the cables then carefully reattach them. If you still have an intermittent problem would suggest leaving the screws out of the T-con board as this will give the ribbon cable more slack.
Don't attempt any of this unless you know what you're doing - risk of damage to screen if handled indelicately also risk of fire when plugged back if the ribbon cables aren't secured properly.
Could be one of the bulbs. This TV is lighted at the sides with fluorescent type bulbs, not LED. Maybe one needs replaced but it's a tricky job to do yourself as you could end up with serious light bleeding. I'd take it to a repair shop.

Our 42" LG picture is also split down the middle. It doesn't matter if it is cable or a DVD. I would love to know if anyone has found out the solution to this prob. The TV is only 3 years old...

I had the same exact problem as posted above. My 50" LG plasma was out of warranty for 1 year! I called the LG executive call center, and they were very helpful. They offered to pay for the parts and labor. They recommended a few local repair shops, and they set everything up for me. The tech came out within 4 days with one part. The tech had to come out one more time the following week, since more parts were needed for the repair. The Y sustain board, along with 2 adjacent parts that are required to be replaced as a set, and the power supply had to be replaced (parts alone cost just over $900). TV is like new again; I'm very happy with how LG handled it, and made what could have been a bad experience a good one.

call 877-543-8325 this is an LG Executive call center and they will fix this for free. I have a 50" plasma I bought january 2006 which is out of warranty by 5 months. They faxed me and the LG repair shop a 30 day warranty for my tv to cover the repair. Just tell them you heard a pop and in my case the picture is distorted. All they need is the model number and serial number and they should take care of it. No arguing needed.
SOURCE: LG 50PC5D rigth screen colored lines 12''
LG 50PC5D-UL Plasma TV.... While playing XBox360 the screen just shrunk to the top 3" as though some one was holding a towel over the bottom portion of the screen. I have unplugged all inputs and the unit. I have let it cool down. Still it remains in this condition. I can't see the menu because it's in the portion of the screen that is "blacked out". What do I do?

it seems to be a bad connection somewhere but I disconnected the ribbon cable and got a verticle line of snow instead of a blank line. the line is about 34 mm wide and starts 285 mm from the left edge starts on the Blue and goes to the Red pixels. so if they are 1mm wide that would be 34 bands of color.
I would sure like to figure out the solution to this one or I got a TV I need to throw away cause the o'lady is gonna bust my balls if I can't fix this!

I have exactly the same problem and quite frankly found LG customer services response absolutely appalling and most unhelpful.
