Hi, hope you can help. tv made a popping sound and picture went off (black sceen) but sound is ok, tv only 2 years old with medium usage, is there a comman fault with this tv- LG 50" plasma with side speakers
I have the same problem with my 50px4dr plasma TV. My picture made a loid popping noise then the picture went out but I still had sound though. I called LG but my TV is 7 months past the warranty period. They gave me a TV repair shop that they recommend to call. Someone came to my house which cost me $79 for a service call and they checked my TV. It is the Y sustain board that went out and there is two other parts that need to be changed with that or it will short out again. He warned me that these parts were going to be expensive. He called LG to get the price on the parts which is $450. He is charging me $250 less my service charge to repair the TV. He said it takes at least an hour for the labor. He also said he has had plenty of calls with the same problem. I called LG once already complaing that I spent $4500 on a TV that only lasted 2 yrs and 7 months. That was before I even knew how much it was going to cost to repair it. Now that I know how much it is I am going to call them again to see what if anything they are going to do. If I cannot get any help from LG I will take legal action.I have the same problem with my 50px4dr plasma TV. My LG 50PX10 just made a loud pop sound also and the picture went out. I do still have sound but no picture at all, just a black screen. I honestly don't know how old it is for I purchased it with the house just over a year ago. My LG 50PX10 just made a loud pop sound also and the picture went out. I had the same exact problem as posted above. My 50" LG plasma was out of warranty for 1 year! I called the LG executive call center, and they were very helpful. They offered to pay for the parts and labor. They recommended a few local repair shops, and they set everything up for me. The tech came out within 4 days with one part. The tech had to come out one more time the following week, since more parts were needed for the repair. The Y sustain board, along with 2 adjacent parts that are required to be replaced as a set, and the power supply had to be replaced (parts alone cost just over $900). TV is like new again; I'm very happy with how LG handled it, and made what could have been a bad experience a good one.
Call 877-543-8325 this is an LG Executive call center and they will fix this for free. I have a 50" plasma I bought january 2006 which is out of warranty by 5 months. They faxed me and the LG repair shop a 30 day warranty for my tv to cover the repair. Just tell them you heard a pop and in my case the picture is distorted. All they need is the model number and serial number and they should take care of it. No arguing needed.

I think you have a defective power board. the pop sound in coming from the board and giving you a low output voltage. do it yourself price about two hundred for parts.
This is a common failure in many PLASMAs. One of the boards in the TV blew. Most likely It is going to be the Y-sus but could have also taken out the Z-sus(sometimes called the X-sus) and the Y-drives. These boards put and maitian the picture on the screen. The best way to tell is to check the voltages on the boards to see how extensive the damage was but I would defintly start with the Y-sus.
I suggest you guys take your TV's into a repair shop like Sears or Best Buy... The main reason most plasmas go dark is because of decay, but I don't think this is the case. Because what you describe is similar to what happens in LCD's when their back light goes out. Although you can open up and repair the back light your self in a LCD, I would not advise you to do so for a Plasma, because of the hazardous chemicals used in the plasma display plus the fact that plasmas don't use back lighting. And 2 years is way to soon for decay to be a factor. So more than likely a circuit shorted out and the TV has to be opened up to be repaired.

Our LG 50" plasma tv screen went black after a popping noise but still had sound, after great diliberations decided to take the back off and have a peek!
We unplugged the tv and tested the fuses (there were three we could see) one had blown, the one on the left as you look at the back of the tv it also has one above it. We wrote the code/seriel number down and took the fuse to the electrical wholesalers Maplin and bought a pack of 10 fuses for £1.29 replaced the fuse in the tv and everything now fine!!!!!!
Hope this might be of use to anyone whose lost the picture after a loud popping/snacking noise but still has sound.
