Clicking sound is the solenoid activated starting switch pulling in, then dropping out because of low voltage when the starter motor is connected electrically. When the contact drops out, the load on battery is reduced, voltage rises again enough to pull the solenoid switch back in and click. This happens four or five times a second and thus hear the "clicking" sound.
Only a load tester will indicate if battery is weak. Simple voltage testers only show open circuit voltage.
Load testers usually apply a 50 Amp load for 30 seconds. That 30 second voltage must then be compared to the battery's CCA rating, which gives you an true indication of battery's condition.
I suspect a load test will show the present battery to be weak or bad. If battery is five or more years old, it owes you nothing.
Best deals on new batteries is WalMart with free installation.
There must be a short circuit inside the VOM. If you can open it up easily, check all the wires for short circuits, especially the wires that connect up to the function switch.
The #61-085 does not have batteries. (It does not test for continuity)
The #61-086 does have batteries.
1. Replace batteries when touching the leads together no longer lights the continuity LED or produces an audible sound.
2. Remove test leads from tester.
3. Loosen the encapsulated screw from the bottom of the case.
4. Remove battery cap.
5. Replace the batteries with (4) new 1.5V button-type batteries (IDEAL# 61-201, IEC #LR44, or NEOA# 1166A).
6. Replace battery cap and re-tighten the encapsulated screw.

the current reading on a tester is independent of the battery in the tester. The battery is there to provide a tiny amount of current so you can read the resistance on a circuit in ohms.
What probably happened is that the useage selector switch was in the wrong position when a measurement was made for voltage of other and being in the current position created a short and the current measurement circuit was burned out.
