I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L engine with an AT with OD that is running rough. The problem that I am having is that I purchased a scan tool and it will not link up, it will get to the ISO 9141-2 and hang. It will work on a 2003 VW Passat. Here is a link to that tool I purchased if it will help http://www.harborfreight.com/can-obd-ii-code-reader-eobd-scanner-98614.html . Do I have a ECM going bad on the Jeep or a wiring problem. Thanks for any help

There should also be a same size hole (roughly) in the blower mounting flange. Normally all blower assemblies have a rubber tube connecting these two holes. It provides cooling air for the blower motor. And now you know!
The check engine light is because all check engine light codes are caused by components that affect emissions. It's not actually an engine problem, it's a problem with either your O2 sensor, MAF sensor, fuel/air ratio, pyrometer, or exhaust. ______________ gm diagnostic tools
Mate.I would find a different mechanic.Even in Australia where things are dearer, you could get a motor from a wrecked car fitted for a lot less.Jeeps of this model are often doing over 300 000 kms.One reason. They are good and tough.Easy to work on(some would say differently)but are overall very reliable.Hope this helps
On a 96 model, the heater fan motor comes out through the engine bay.Take off the batt. leads.Undo the bolts and then remove the fan power lead. The fan has 3 bolts. It then comes out.Hope this helps
it looks like your engine is having an over rich fuel mixture maybe, thatswhy when you press the pedal to the floor it starts becouse you allow lots of air to help clean the mixture while cranking, also you should have black smoke in the tailpipe until it cleans up and runs fine, i think youre having a leak in one our more injectors you should check them first for proper seal under pressure these is done in an injector test machine, second it may be a defective map sensor these trucks some times have a bad map and dont give a MIL (malfunction indacator lamp) and last but more rare to be is a blocked fuel pressure regulator chek fuel pressure it should be between 38 and 45 psi and it shoul hold these pressure when you turn off the engine if pressure drops fast its injector seal problems or fuel pump check
1996 is about the year that OBD II, came about. Not sure witch one you have. OBD I, cars could clear codes by removing negative battery post. Problem doesn't always leave. I'd take it to an Auto Zone or Advance Auto where they will scan it for free and tell you what your problem is and of course what part they can sell you.lbreen
Bring the jeep to a parts store and have them read the engine code(s) stored in the computer. The engine light on indicates a problem, and this is the best way to figure out what's wrong. Most stores will check for codes for free (they plug a scan tool into the port under the dash to 'read' any stored codes). Write down the code #'s and ask them what they meah and how to fix the problem. If u have any further questions, u can post them here. Let me know how u make out.
