2002 toyota rav4,135k, auto. This morning turned key, engine cranks at normal speed, but doesnt even think of starting- just keeps on cranking. Crank or cam sensor?

Have you had major work done on this engine? This might not be the timing causing the issue. What EXACTLY does it do when you turn the key?

• Nothing, not even dash lights?
• Very slow cranking that gets even slower as you crank the engine?
• Cranks over at normal speed but doesn't try to start?
• Cranks over, coughs and splutters like it's trying but just won't catch and idle?
• Does it crank over, Start then die?

This information can give clues to what the problem might be so please comment below and i'll see what help I can give you.

the battery must not be dead is first
and not testing fuse, with KEY on,
1;/2 the fuses are dead KEY off that is 100% Normal.
key on does IP cluster glow lamps as it did just like it did for 13 years?
head lamps bright key on an off both, (it must)
heater blower on high, works loud ,key on,
is the starter motor dead/? called cranking,?????????????

you said new crank , I'm sure you meant a new starter motor>?
is the starter dead? now? if yes post how to test a dead starter.
starters fail in many ways.

• dead
• chatters.
• clicks,
• makes a HUGE nasty loud bang, (engine or it seized)
• or starter spins fast (sounds like sewing machined) but engine cranks shaft never spins (turns ) starter pinon failure.

or starter goes GRRRRRGRRRRRR and crank shaft spins but does not start.(seen and heard)

a dead starter with a good battery (charged) may crank
if you learn to crank it in NEUTRAL. (auto tranny?)
does starter work , JUMPER cable jump started?????
crank in park then try Neutral.
on stick shift cars the clutch switch bad kills cranking.

Sounds like a “crank - no start” conditioning. This could be caused by bad cam sensor, bad crank sensor, or theft deterrent system. I had this happen on a 2002 Oldsmobile Alero. No codes displayed, but it was the crank sensor.

Fuel pressure regulator may not be working properly, allowing fuel pressure to bleed off overnight. Try (before going to crank position on key) turning the key on for 3 - 5 seconds, then back off. Do this three or four times. (The fuel pump will run for 3 - 5 seconds before the ECM turns it off if you don't go to the start position.) This should allow pressure to build to what is needed initially to start the engine. Now try to start normally. If this works, you need a new pressure regulator. It is located either in the fuel rail, or on the fuel pump itself.

When you turn the key to start does the starter engage an spin the engine ? or nothing happens .
the lights and music come on but the motor will not start when I turn the key ??????? Will not start how ?

Dear sir I think you should check the engine tempreture sensor . I understand that starter work but if doesent you have to check the fuse box there is a relay it may be not working

make shure your baterie haves abaut 13 amps
then check your starter solenoid make shure that curent is geting there wen you turn the key

starter isnt engaging, if you know where the starter is, tap on it with a hammer
1 person crank it over while the other person taps on it - its on the back of the engine
