Where is speed sensor located in 1998 rav4 2wheel drive and what connects it to speedometer is there wire to fo;;ow to it where is differential housing

Check on the differential housing. If it's "by wire", it's most likely there. There would be a wiring harness or wire on the sensor that just snaps on.

My speedometer stop working what can i do to fix it

Causes...............

Faulty Vehicle Speed Sensor
- Vehicle speed sensor harness or connectors is open or shorted
- Vehicle speed sensor circuit poor electrical connection
- Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM)

The P0500 code is very common on the Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Yaris, Toyota Camry, Toyota Tundra, Toyota RAV-4. Before replacing the sensor you should try cleaning the sensor gear and erasing the code. If the light comes back you may have to replace the sensor.

Does a fault on the speed sensor stop the car whiles moving it?

No, A bad or malfunctioning speed sensor on a vehicle can cause a wide variety of problems ranging from an inconsistent speedometer to what appear to be transmission problems. As the transmission needs to know the speed, but it should not stop the car or stop it from running.

Where is the speed sensor located?

The vehicle speed sensor is located below the air cleaner assembly, it is held in with one bolt (I believe 10mm):
  1. Remove the bolt and vehicle speed sensor assembly.
  2. Remove the clip and speedometer driven gear from vehicle speed sensor.
  3. Remove the O-ring from vehicle speed sensor
  4. Coat a new O-ring with ATF and install it to the vehicle speed sensor.
  5. Install the speedometer driven gear to the vehicle speed sensor and clip.
  6. Install the vehicle speed sensor assembly and torque the bolts. Torque: 16 Nm (160 kgf-cm, 12 ft. lbs.)

This is an electronic speedo, could be several things but probably 1st and easiest thing to try is repalceing the vehicle speed sensor(vss). Also need to know if check engine light is on, and if any other electrical items are malfunctioning.
