1966 Ford Mustang with 289 factory engine.Builds up pressure in radiator.Put new thermostat in.Question is to make sure its installed correctly.I put the spring side of the thermostat toward the engine block,is this right?engine is still building up too much pressure in cooling system. If thermostat is right,I am thinking the problem is a head gasket or intake gasket problem.
I already lowered the ratio from 180 down to 160 and is still building up too much pressure.I already lowered the ratio from 180 down to 160 and is still building up too much pressure.

If it's a "K" code hi-po 289, then it has solid lifters and the valve clearance is adjustable. If a standard 289, then it has hydraulic lifters which are zero clearance and self adjusting, i.e. there is no adjusting screw on the rocker arm.
You must remove the fan first, then slide the shroud over the front of the engine, you may have to use a bungee cord to keep it out of the way while you reinstall the fan. Then mount the shroud to the radiator mount. Check all clearances between the fan and the shroud. If they contact, you'll be replacing not only the fan and shroud but also the water pump since you'll damage the front shaft seal.
the C4 automatic transmission is a 3 speed transmission, it shifts by hydraulic pressure controlled by a governor and actuators, I would check your linkage to see that it is hooked up correctly to allow movement through all range selections, disconnect the linkage at the trans and see how many detents you feel while moving the lever back and forth, make sure to chock your vehicle as moving the lever from Park may cause the car to move. Let me know what you find, hope this helps
try to run the water pump without hoses, and add water in the 'in' side, if is powers out the other side, then it's fine. how is your water/coolant mix?
