I WORKING ON A LEXMARK X642E WHICH CAN NOT SEND OR RECIEVE FAXES. WHEN TRY TO GO INTO FAX SETUP MENU IT SAY MODEM FIALED TO INITIALIZE!!

Please refer to the Lexmark X2600 Series User's Guide on how to setup your printer for faxing.

Please try this approach:

1. Try to resend the fax. There may have been a problem with the quality of the connection.

2. Decrease the transmission speed of your fax modem. Press Setup button > Fax Setup > Dialing and Sending > Max Send Speed > 9600. Resend the fax.

3. Re-register your user information - fax name and fax number. Some fax machines block faxes without sender information. Press Setup button > Fax Setup > Dialing and Sending > Your Fax Name (re-enter your fax name). Follow the same steps and go to Your Fax Number - re-enter your fax number. Resend the fax.

The problem could be to the transmission signal. Try to set your Fax Send Speed to 9600 bps. On your printer operator panel, press Setup > Fax Setup > Dialing and Sending > Max Send Speed > select 9600. Hit Ok to save the setting.
Try to send a fax again to verify that the problem is fixed.

Make sure you plugged it back into the right port on the printer itself. The one I have actually has two different phone line plug-in ports - one is for the FAX line that connects to the wall. The other is so you can attach a separte phone as an extention to talk on. Good luck. Also, after it is plugged back into the wall, did you power down, wait 30 seconds and then power back on? Sometimes these things need to recognize at start up whether or not they are connected to other devices, etc. Good luck.

Hi. You may be having a problem with the quality of connection. Check telephone cable for any physical defects. Try to plug printer in a different phone jack in the wall. Try to call your phone company to have the line checked, maybe they can do something to increase the quality of signal. Make sure that you already registered the user information like your fax name and your fax number in the fax by going to Fax mode > press Menu > Fax setup > Dialling and Sending > Your Fax Name or Your Fax Number. You can also decrease the transmission speed of your fax by going to Fax mode > press Menu > Fax setup > Dialling and Sending > Max Send Speed > change the speed to 9600 bps > hit check to save settings. Need more information about this problem.
1. If you plug a phone in the wall is there a dial tone.
2. Can you recieve faxes.
3. If you can reset the machine, reset or initialize it.
4. With a analog phone plug it in that fax socet and try calling the phone to see if it rings. If it does the line is good.
5. If it does have a dial tone, suspect a modem board or main board defective.

Fax machines are ANALOG devices and will not work reliably on DIGITAL phone lines

You may have to experiment to get the fax to work on DSL. Try these suggestions: press MENU, then scroll to:PRINT REPORTS. Scroll to HELP LIST and press SET BUTTON. Press START button to print HELP LIST. On the HELP LIST printout, locate the FAX MENU. Using a cell phone, call your fax and see if the fax answers. If not, try changing the following settings (change one setting, then call the fax with the cell and see if it answers, Make sure you set each changed setting back to what it was, until you find the right one.) try changing: RING DELAY, F/T RING TIME, EASY RECEIVE, OVERSEAS MODE. Also on the HELP LIST, find the INITIAL SETUP MENU. Select RECEIVE MODE, and try each option, again calling the fax with your cell until it answers.After you get the fax to answer calls from your cell, try sending and receiving with another fax, or use Brothers AUTOMATIC FAX-BACK SYSTEM, which will automatically send your fax a test printout when you call it. Just call 1-800-521-2846 from your fax machine, IT MAY BE ALREADY PROGRAMMED INTO YOUR MACHINES AUTO DIAL LIST, AUTO DIAL NUMBER 001..
