If the belts are old they will allow the motor too much outward room, so that the motor shaft can rub against the bottom of the machine. Also make sure the motor rollers are not cracked, which they have a tendency to do.
OK thanks. Are you saying that I should go ahead and first replace the belts? They did appear to be very slack and they haven't been changed in 10 yrs. Thanks again! I will also check the motor rollers for any cracking.
Well, first make sure that the noise is indeed coming from the motor shaft rubbing against the bottom. By the way, the pump belt needs to be loose, so that all the tension is on the transmission belt. The transmission belt is also the clutch; so in spin it will be slipping and gradually bring the spin basket at full speed. That is why you need to replace the transmission belt with an authorized replacement. A regular belt will not "slip".
Thanks again. From this link I believe I only have one belt.... the washer drive belt. Is that correct? http://www.partselect.com/ModelFrames.as...
Well. now you are confusing me. First you were talking about "belts" (plural). That would mean that you have the old style machine. Does it have the pump sitting in the right front corner? If so, you have to have two belts. If not, we are back to square one. The "newer" toploader Maytag has only one belt. (I did not check the model number). The noise could be coming from anywhere, but it is probably something in the pump.
Sorry to get back so late; I was busy all day. No I do not think changing the belt will fix the problem. Unless there are pieces of rubber missing. That will definitely cause noise. You cannot tighten the belt; the motor swings one way for wash, and the other way for spin; and thus it keeps the correct tension. You could take the belt off and rotate the pump pulley and listen; there could be something inside the pump.

Sorry, shouldn't have said belts; yes, there is ONE belt underneath. Looking from underneath there are three pulleys the drive belt goes around. Two small pulleys... one in the front right corner and one in the front left corner, and a 3rd large pulley in the center of the machine. So I guess you are saying that changing this drive belt likely won't fix this loud noise we are getting on ALL cycles of the washer? Thanks again for the advice.
