My Kenmore Top load washer works fine except from time to time it won't spin and discharge the rinse water thoroughly. Sometimes if I move the drum back and forth while manually spinning it, it will gradually spin on its own. Other times it works just fine. Any suggestions?

The first thing I would check would be the motor coupling, sounds like this is worn on your unit, you shouldnt be able to spin the basket by hand very easily. The couling could be engaing and then slipping. When the tub doesn't spin the water will not be pumped out. If it is making any grinding noise or whirring noise then that would point to the coupling. The coupling is only around $25.00 to buy and then a service call to get it replaced. Also check the lid switch to make sure it is working, if this switch does not make, the machine will not spin, this is a safety devise. You can push down on it with a pen or small scredriver and see if this is making and the drum spins while the lid is open. Sometimes when the coupling goes bad you might also get a slight burning rubber smell and this is an indicator that it is almost gone.
