I have a fine green line running down my screen

If it is on your TV or computer it means someone or something hit the screen so hard it made a line, or it could have been faulty.

The screen could exhibit such issue , if the screen has gone bad or the video card that give signals to the screen. To isolate the problem connect the laptop to an external monitor / TV if the output on the same is fine , the video card is fine and the screen would need a replacement.

Well the reson why there are lines in it becuase its starting to wear out the connections or if you are using the av cables or an rf switch it might need a new av cable or and rf switch then.

thats a connector issue in your LCD, it might be your LCD connector have lose connections check it.

does the led blink when it shuts down if so how many times does it blink? And the green line is that running up and down the screen or across the screen?

I encountered a problem with my sony vaio laptop after installing windows xp. It lost sound and keeps reporting that it does not have sound device when i try to play music.

The lines I believe are retrace lines (if I interpert correctly) and may or may not be corrected by turning down the screen controls red green and blue. But first I would see if the 200V source that feeds the video outputs on each crt board is there or low. If so the problem would be a resistor or 200-250V capacitor that feed them. (200V source usually off the HV transformer secondary.
