check that the disc is suitable for the dvd format

blu ray will not read in a normal dvd as will some audio cd discs

This can be caused by dirt on the laser lens, or a posible malfunction of it. CD/DVD lenses tend to loose power over time, when that happens, they cant read the discs anymore and you have to get them replaced.
But before you go that way, try cleaning the DVD drive with a disc cleaner, if problem persists, try to purchase a new, and compatible, dvd drive and change it yourself if you can, or take it to repair.

The dvd drive on an xbox is keyed to the motherboard, so if it (the dvd drive) is changed it won't work on another machine. If this is not the case try cleaning the laser with a laser cleaning disc.

Was this a burned dvd or a store bought one? Sounds like the laser that reads dvd is dirty, try to play another dvd and see what happens after cleaning.

Motor was not working. Disposed of old player and bought another dvd player

The blue discs are actually CDs. Same with the PSOne black discs.

Your DVD laser has gone out or is not able to focus. First try cleaning the laser lens with a Q-tip and a very, very minute amount of rubbing alcohol.

If that doesn't do it for you try setting the machine on it's side, standing vertical. I have a machine that will only read discs in this stance.

i understand that your pc has a single dvd-drive that has the problem that it dos read dvds but not cds...
please give model because this is a rare error.
to check it, get the following disks and the freeware program 'burnatonce' (it is a burning software that accesses the drives on a lower than windows basis )
to check from the hardware side what the problem is:

install burnatonce
run it
open tools/device info
and check if the following disc are really recognized or not

a standard music cd(audio cd)
a computer cd(original ! windows install cd or other install cd)
a self burnt cd containing mp3's (CD-R type, 700MB or800MB)
any other computer cd for pc

an original film dvd
a selfburnt film dvd (DVD-R)
an original computer-data dvd (any PC-Game will do)

if only dvd's work, strange!

get a new drive then.

It's a new system glitch you may need to send it in or ake it back and exchange.

Double-check your DVD player's user manual/spec sheet to see if it plays Mp3 format files at all. Find out, specifically what kind it can read.

If your Mp3 disc is a DATA CD instead of an AUDIO CD, then nothing besides a computer is going to play it.

Whats the SCPH model number? What appears on screen when you put a disc in? If it can read CD's but not DVD,s then this is a classic laser related problem, Possibly a dirty laser or syptoms of a worn laser that requires replacement.
