You have a broken brush bar belt. Just simply replace it with a new one. This is very cheap and easy to fix.
Pull the cover off of the bottom of the Vac and the belt will be there. If it's not broken then it is still stretched to the point that it is spinning on the brush bar. If this is the case, you may be smelling burnt rubber. Replace it.

The most likely thing that has happened is that a belt has broken or slipped off it's roller. You will have to take the bottom cover off to check the belt. The filter may also have to be cleaned. Here is a website where you can choose your model and get some details on it:
