Try reseating the printhead. Remove the ink cartridges, lift up the lock lever and then pull the printhead out at an angle (IIRC). Then reinsert the printhead and lower the lever. Then reinsert the ink tanks one by one; Press down until you hear the click. Close the scanning unit and hit Set to print the alignment page. Tell the printer which line in each column has the best print quality (most solid); this is the horizontal alignment. Then repeat for the vertical alignment.
Try resetting the printer (on/off cycling). If this doesn't work, you may need a new printhead. Unfortunately, this may not solve the problem and you may need to have the unit serviced. Printheads are not returnable once you install them (so if replacing it doesn't help, you are stuck with the spare.)
Good luck. I hope this helps.

FYI Printhead is inside the ink cartridge holder with 2 little tabs at the top sides that need to be squeezed to remove it. I was trying to remove the whole thing.FYI Printhead is inside the ink cartridge holder with 2 little tabs at the top sides that need to be squeezed to remove it. I had same problem of wrong cartridge error on canon multipass 700. I read some of this site's remedies and tried them. First I realigned printer head , then I removed cartridges and cleaned the place where the cartridge sits at bottom with 1 alcohol soaked q-tip ( 1 for each color) and reinserted the cartridges again. Left the printer off for a few days. When I turned on printer , It warmed up and the wrong cartridge message was gone and I was able to print again. Wow! Thanks again for all your help.
if you ever get this figured out, let me know, my mp730 says the same thing, i had the head cleaned after i got a wrong cartridge error and now i have a put in cartridge error
I have the multipass mp700 and have just experienced the same message ..... wrong cartridge. After reading the manual, from the disc, it means that there's something wrong with the print head, most likely needs cleaning, but it won't clean because the printer is sending a malfunction message. I will be trying to clean the head and if that doesn't fix it then I'll buy a new print head. Good luck with the problem.
if you replace the black ink cart with an original one then it's the print head Solution:
