You need to check your picture menu to verify you contrast is at max and brightness level is at approx 55% . if good , call for service and have htem check the setting on the screen controls. sometime they drift with heat, cold and age. when this happens, they usually have to reset the grey scale (black and white content) of the picture. Beyond that could be a defective red crt drive pcb or red crt or small signal panel.

Why does my Toshiba tv screen go from dark to light?

The TV's main culprits to be causing this problem are "dynamic contrast" which maybe darkening the backl light in dark scenes an example a night time or a dark scene in a movie. To make the blacks be deeper (as LCD/LED TV are rubbish at blacks) or brighten it on bright scenes to make the light be lighter and once again to make the blacks be deeper so the images pop out. Also "eco lighting" this will dim or brighten the image based on the amount of light in a room in order to be saving energy. Ether way the easy fix is to turn both of these features off. You will get rid of the problem and enjoy more subtler shades of colour that would otherwise be bleached (brightend) or crushed(darkend) out..

I have a vizio Vt470m....the picture has always been perfect. All of a sudden when picture shows scenes with very little light (dark scenes like at night, space, low light) the black color almost look

Either the TCON board or the LCD panel has failed. Start by replacing the TCON board. If the problem persists, the panel is bad and the cost to replace it would be too high.

Jvc model#av27d304. brightness is turned up but pict is still dark. if there is a night scene screen is almost black.also seem to be way to much red have tried to adjust to no avail thanx for ur help

That sounds like the tube tracking is out of tollerance and the auto grey scale can no longer work.
A new tube will fix this problem, so look at replacing the TV.

Brightness of picture

If you feel good about opening your set then you can try this: Look for the flyback (high voltage) transformer, with the thick red wire which goes to the top of the picture tube. There are 2 controls on the flyback transformer, focus (top) and screen (bottom)Turn the brightness and contrast all the way down and then increase the screen control until you see retrace lines, and then back it down until those lines just vanish. Return the brightness and contrast to normal and adjust the focus control, if necessary, for a nice sharp picture. Let me know if that brings your brightness back.
