Even when blank your memory stick will not have exactly 8gb free space.
It's also likely that you have saved data on the stick also, as well as files the psp creates for things like internet browser bookmarks, history etc.
For clarification also, how much free memory is it stating you have with no games on the stick?

you can check the compatibility of your component.
For the MSAC-US1, it says it will NOT read the memory stick pro.

That model only reads the Memory Stick and PSP™ Memory Stick of 32 MB.

What is the maximum memory stick I can use with a

PSP system is compatible with any capacity Memory Stick media as long as it carries the Memory Stick logo memorysticklogo.jpg (this space ship looking thing). Additionally, you should keep your system updated with the latest firmware to ensure compatibility of all Memory Stick media capacities. Visit PSP System Software Update to download and install the most recent version.

in my personal experience i have found that the 8 gig size works best for me. taking into account the price and such. on sale you could get the 8 gig for about $25 to $30. and even cheaper if you get the other brands. they will work as long as they have the memory stick logo on them... sandisk is one brand i've bought.

I cannot load saved games

usually this happens when the save data is corrupted. and this could happen because that certain spot on your memory stick is corrupted. what i mean by this is that all of your other save files, music, and videos you have on your memory stick might work just fine but a few save files might not load... this is because sometimes the whole memory stick don't go bad just some small sector. depending on how you look at it if a tiny bit of your 8 gig card is bad you could say the whole thing is bad since u won't know exactly which area

PSP memory stick - unreadable data

Saved games do take up a lot of space but also not every memory card is a big, if you have a USB flash drive you may also notice it does not appear at its full capacity, this is because some memory is used for the cache and backing up.

PC doesnt recongize my memory stick as a formatted memory stick...

Do both systems run XP? Also, check the driver files on your PC, and test it with another card of the same make. Is the write-protection switch set to on? Test the card reader with other formats of cards, if it is a multiple reader, just to make sure that it is functioning at all.

Save downloaded games

well, you'll require a modified firmware inorder to play games from your mem stick......now installing a custom firmware or downgrading is a risky process , so do it at your own risk! once that's done, you'd require a "ripkit" to compress the image incase if it doesn't fit in to the 1 gig stick.....get ripkits for all games from http://forums.maxconsole.net/
