You did not state which brand you have, most vacuums you either take off the bottom plate to get to the belt and brush roll, or you take off the top cover to access them. The belt goes over the motor shaft or pulley, then over one end of the brush roll.

New belt sold to me for model 116 , belt #20-40111 seems too small, is this possible?

A new belt is usually an inch or two shorter than an old belt. Belts must be stretched to almost twice their original length to be installed.

Dirt Devil featherlite cyclonic belt comes off

What makes the belt come off?
1) Wrong belt. use only genuine DD belt. No generics.
2) Worn out belt. Sometimes a worn belt acts this way. Just because it looks good, does not mean it is good.
3) Belt improperly installed.
4) Brush roll not spinning freely. (replace Brush Roll
5) Brush roll is not installed properly.
6) Machine is worn out where it pivots between the body and the lower nozzle. To check (without a belt installed) see if there is a lot of play forward and backward between the nozzle and the main body. If so, once a new belt is installed and you are pushing and pulling on the handle the motor shaft comes out of alignment.
NOTE: the #6 problem is the rarest and usually is due to an extreme amount of use over years.

Let me know if this helps.

A cloth belt got wrapped around the roll and after taking the roll off and getting the belt off of it, now the roll won't turn when I turn the vacuum on.

Install new belt. You'll have to remove the botton cover and the remove the brush cylinder and install new bell. What happen when the brush cylinder stop because of the colth belt, it stripped the rubber kogs off the belt. The only thing that turns on your Dyson is the motor. GB...stewbison

Why is my making a really loud noise and smells burnt when I turn it on. I have a new belt on it.

Improper installation of belt can result in a loose or off center belt which will flap and make lots of noise. It can also result in the burning rubber smell. The belt is probably ruined now, and will need to be replaced again. Make sure new ones are installed and centered correctly.

There is an idler pulley that takes up the slack in the V belt when you pull the handle back to vacuum. Make sure it is engaging properly and the V belt is installed correctly.

Installing belt

here are the step by step instructions from the owners manual for your machine.
Disconnect cleaner from electrical outlet. WARNING: Agitator brush roll can start suddenly. Unplug cleaner before turning it over. Replacing Flat Belt Place handle in low position and turn cleaner over so bottom side is facing up. Remove the 6 screws as shown with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift off bottom plate. Replace belt if it is stretched, cut or broken. To check the flat belt. Removing Bottom Plate Removing Belt Positioning Belt Remove used belt from large pulley and discard. Reposition bottom plate and 6 Phillips head screws. Tighten screws securely. Insert agitator brush roll through belt and position belt in groove (A) on agitator brush roll. Inspecting V-Belt The V-belt is designed to last for a long time and is not normally replaced. However, if the V-belt is cracked, gouged or broken, it should be replaced. Slide flat belt off large pulley. To remove V-belt, slide back of belt over pulley (A). Then firmly pull on belt and “snap” it out. Discard used belt. To install new belt (with lettering on outside of belt), slide back of belt over pulley and pull front of belt toward groove next to pulley. Belt will “pop” into place. Flat Belt: What to Buy Use only genuine HOOVER belts with your cleaner. When purchasing a new belt, ask for Flat belt - HOOVER part No. 40201-271. V-Belt: What to Buy Use only genuine HOOVER belts with your cleaner. When purchasing a new belt, ask for V belt - HOOVER part No. 40201-200.

Hoover very noisy after new belt installed.

what is the belt # you have installed (generic)? Yes, there are problems with using generic belts on Hoover Vacuums. If you have noise I would suspect the roller, and replace it. the cost is about $25 and is something that you can install. The newer type are mande of wood and are very quiet.

I need some instructions on how to install the replacement belt? Thank you. JBS

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Usually there are screws, clips or levers on the bottom of the vacuum and you need to either remove the bottom plate and once you have taken the screws, etc. out the top cover will come off. And then you can proceed with the removal and the install of the new belt. 1st you need to remove @ least one end of the Hoover brushroll and take of the old belt and slide on a new belt. Once the belt is on the pulley side of the brushroll; then re-install the brushroll. Make sure that the brush is spinning freely B4 you install the new belt, then take a belt puller or a screwdriver with a left or right hand hook to use as a belt puller and then stretch the belt onto the motor pulley, then take and roll the belt until it is tracking straight and then re-install the top cover and or the bottom plate, tighten down the screws, levers or clips. So, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.
