The Molex connectors in a desktop PC are keyed to ensure proper placement. The 4-pin flat connectors that are flat on the bottom and have beveled edged on top are connected to hard drives, CD, and DVD-ROM drives that have matching power sockets. Those devices that have Molex sockets usually have the 40-pin ribbon cables for IDE devices. There will be a four-pin square connector that connects to the socket on the motherboard for the CPU power. Then there is the 20 or 24-pin connector that is the motherboard main power.
You will find 3-pin to Molex only as the 4th pin is for control which older Molex does not support. You bought the wrong model fan for your motherboard. You might consider rewiring it with the old connector. See e.g. http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1193-page7.html which provides wiring logic.
FYI, post your question in the right section, this is a courtesy to yourself since the people looking at this section are computer people not electricians. I would ask on this forum, sounds like they may even fix for you for the cost of shipping and handling. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/
A 9800GTX+ video card usually requires (2) 6-pin PCI-e power connectors from your PSU. The PSU that game with your computer might not have that. You can use an adapter that converts (2) 4-pin Molex to (1) 6-pin PCI-e connector. That does mean that you will need (4) 4-pin Molex power connectors.
These are relatively simple to find. Although there are some complications when locating them, for the most part, they're in no way difficult to locate, the problem YOU may be having though, is that you just don't have a pin output for another fan. IF that is the case, simply go to your nearest computer hardware store, and purchase a 3pin ATX fan to 4pin Molex Connector Cable.
they look like this: [img]http://i.s.shopwiki.com/i/data/140x140/4/735/332/aHR0cDovL2VwLnlpbWcuY29tL2lwL0kveWhzdC0xNTYyMzEyMTk4NjM5NV8yMDUzXzEzOTY5NTEz==.jpg/img]
that will allow you to change the fans connector to something you can use. Simply remove the female molex on your hard drive if you don't have a free male, and mate them, then rehook the new empty one to the hard drive, and the fan to the other. **note** this DOES take power from your PSU (power supply unit) so make sure that you have something of a good wattage, since this will take a 12 volt discharge to be kept.
first count the wires in the molex connector then search the motherboard for an area that has the same number of pins sticking up and reconnect the molex connector to the pins and your in business
This page at Tigerdirect.com is the SATA adapter. This page is a 4-pin molex Y cable which you could use if you need extra plugs to use with the adapter. I only used these as examples because I use TD frequently. Similar parts are available from other online sources.
Most new power supplies have a twenty pin Molex connector and a 4 pin Molex connector. If you look closely at the connectors you will see that they go together a certain way. It can be very hard to tell. Take a close look at the shapes of each terminal. Match them up exactly.
