Check the adjustable guides in your paper tray. Make sure they are up against the paper all the way around. This is the most common cause of what you describe. The machine uses the positions of these guides to determine what paper size is loaded. If this does not work there may be an issue with the tray itself.

The red light on the startup-button indicates that the machine is not ready for a photocopy. Usally there is something stuck in automated document feeder (ADF). Take a close look and see if can see something in the paperpath. If no luck, try pushing a A4 sheet manually through the ADF and see if something comes out with the sheet. Usally there is a small piece of paper, a paper clip or a staple stuck in the ADF. If nothing found in the ADF, the Scanner Controller Board is probably broke, and needs to be replaced. Good luck.
Are you using Window 7 64 bit or 32 bit? Re-install drivers appropriate for that version of your operating system. Also look at the "Paper Handling" section in the printer menu. Be sure both trays are set for "Plain" paper.
Please print a configuration page from the control panel of the printer
- Menu > Information menu > print configuration.

Tray 2: A4 size / Plain Type

Paper Handling Menu >
Tray 1 Size: Any
Tray 1 Type: Any
Tray 2 Size: A4
Tray 2 Type: Plain
Have you re-installed the driver recently? Perhaps you didn't install the correct one. for example '4200tn' (the "t" standing for 'tray"). If you have only installed the regular 4200 driver, then tray 3 will not show up by default However, you can add it to the current driver as an option. "Right click" the printer icon Select "properties" Select "device settings" under "installable options" Click on "tray 3 -not installed" to open drop down menu. click "installed"
