Why does the printer use one black cartridge and not the other? Is there some way of instructing it to use the left hand one too?

The pixma printers use the large black tank in most modes like text and standard (default) or fast photo printing .. thats most economical when you are using just plain paper .... it will switch to the small black tank only if you select "High" quality mode .. that black matches the nature of the color inks much better and results in really good color pictures if you are using Gloss or Matt high quality photo paper .. you can select the quality level by the following ... when you start to print, a window comes up where you can select which printer you want ... at the right of this window is "preferences" .. click that .. now select the type of paper and "High" quality mode .... now the printer will slow down but will provide really nice results and it will use the small tank black ink instead of the large tank ....the small tank is only used for "high" quality photo prints which is only needed for high quality photo paper .. if you havent tried that yet you might want to get some glossy photo paper (either Canons or Costco has great stuff if you want a lot, like 150 sheets) but most glossy paper will work except colors might need tweeking for some ... print a nice photo in the high quality mode and you should be really impressed .. and you will be using your small black ink tank .. you might want to make the first few pictures small (2x3 inch) untill you are sure everything is the way you want it .. i usually print in the top left corner first .. then reinsert the same paper and try again right next to that .. i do that until i get the colors perfect .. then i print big .. 5x7 or even 8x10 on a new sheet... the high quality mode can be selected for just plain paper and it will use the special black ink but it doesnt result in a better picture .. so no point in doing that unless you want to experiment .. if you never print high quality photos then you will never use the small tank black ink .. it will still be used up eventually because of normal head cleaning the machine does automatically .. ...
grey scaling does not select the special ink unless you select "High" for the quality setting .. then yes you can print using that small tank black ..again it will buy you a lot if you are using High quality photo paper ... almost nothing for plain paper but at least it will allow you to use that ink .. ..

The pigment black is the one used most on a Canon, it is for printing sharp text and the other black is used more for photo printing. How they are used is programmed into the printer at the factory and we don't get to make those kinds of changes.

Testimonial: "Thanks, If I choose "grey scaling" for the printing does that alter the ink usage? Lorna"

  • Anonymous Dec 14, 2009

It will print without color in shades of black, uses more color inks to create black from a combination of colors, there are options in preferences to adjust ink usage to extend the black inks...

SOURCE: Left hand light flashing orange and printer wont

Check the following:
Make sure you have removed the seal on each cartridge.

Turn of Printer, open all shutters, front and back and close them firmly, firmly.

Make sure there is no paper jam.

Usually these are the immediate causes of this kind of scenario.

Then try to print again.

I have a Dell 942 AIO printer and though I have replaced both ink cartridges, the printer shows "Cartridge Missing - install black or colour cartridge on left hand side"

Have you removed the shipping tape on the print head of each cartridge? Is each cartridge locked in each of their housing? Try reinserting the cartridges. Turn the printer off then on again.

Photosmart C5280. Instructions on photo cartridge 348 say remove both black and colour cartridges, then install photo cartridge in right hand cartridge holder. Printer screen then tells me to install...

Your printer uses the following cartridges:

HP 74 - Black ink
HP 75 - Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow ink
HP 99 - Photo Black, Light Cyan, and Light Magenta

You need Photo Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Light Cyan, and Light Magenta to print photos. To accomplish this you install the HP 99 photo cartridge where your HP 74 black cartridge usually goes and you keep the HP 75 color cartridge where it's at. I don't know why your printer told you to remove both cartridges, then reinstall the HP 75 color cartridge.

I have followed the instructions exactly for replacing the black toner cartridge on my Magicolor 2300 DL, but i still have the error message "Replace Toner Black." I tried taking out the cartridge and...

If you have changed the toner cartridge, the printer must complete a calibration cycle (up to 150 seconds). If you open the door before the Ready indicator on the control panel lights up and the Error indicator turns off, the printer stops and repeats the calibration cycle.

1. Open the Status Display (double-click on Status Display icon in the system tray on the lower right-hand portion of the task bar, OR click Start/Programs/KONICA MINOLTA magicolor 2300W Utilities/KONICA MINOLTA magicolor 2300W Status), and then check which toner color is empty.
2. From the Print menu choose Toner Replace...
3. In the Color list box, select the color of the toner cartridge to be replaced (CYAN, MAGENTA, YELLOW, or BLACK).
4. Select the capacity of the new toner cartridge (1500 or 4500).
5. Click OK.
6. When the toner indicator on the control panel starts flashing, open the printer's front door. The carousel is automatically repositioned so that the appropriate toner cartridge can be removed.

2300-1.gif8. Support the middle of the cartridge with your left hand, and then pull out the cartridge.
2300-2.gif9. Remove the new toner cartridge from its shipping carton.
10. Remove the protective cover clearly marked 'Remove'.
Each toner cartridge has a colored end that corresponds to a color inside the cartridge slots. Always install the toner cartridge in the slot of the same color.

I can't change the print cartridge because I can't see it and DO NOT have the manufacturer's instructions. Please help.

Replacing a FINE Cartridge 1) Make sure that the machine is turned on, lift the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) with both hands, then pull the Scanning Unit Support down into place. The Cartridge Holder moves to the left.

2) Remove the empty Cartridge. Press down on the cartridge and then remove it.

3) Prepare the replacement cartridge. Unpack a new Cartridge and remove the orange protective tape carefully.

4) lacing a FINE Cartridge Insert a new Cartridge all the way into the appropriate slot. The Black Cartridge should be installed into the left slot and the Color Cartridge should be into the right slot. Push up the Cartridge until it clicks into place.

5) Lift the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) slightly to set the Scanning Unit Support back to its original position, and then gently close the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover)

Usually the black goes in the right pot and the color to the left..There is usually a difference with the cartridges so that they will not be interchagable in the left or right. Also the color on the tops usually match the pot they go in...
