Yeah I know its a pain... I tried to do it that way too, I ended up calling Sony themselves and this is how they told me to do it. You have to put it on a flashdrive or some other removeable staorage device w USB. Step1- Get a flash drive, stick it in a USB port on your computer. Step2- Go to your music files, like where they are listed on the HD, not WMP. Step3- Highlight a song and rightclick on it, there a bunch of options will pop up. You want -SEND TO- And as you hightlight that at the bottom it should say REMOVEABLE DISK.. Go through and put all songs on the flashdrive this way.. If you hold CTRL down on your keyboard you can go through and select them all at the same time. After youve gotten all the music off stick flash in the PS3.. Go to your music tab and USB should be listed.. Hit triangle on it and go to display all It should all be listed there permitting the PS3 supports all the file types. Go to the first song, and hit triangle on it. It will give you the copy/delete options.. At the very top you will see copy multiple. Click on it and you can go through and copy all songs at once. After that, you should be smooth sailing.. If you need to delete the flash drive to get more music you can do it by Putting it back in the computer and going into MY COMPUTER.. It will be listed under removeable media. If you click on it it will give you the options to format or you can just right click on everything and select delete. good luck.

Sorry, should have added you can do the same thing with photos. The only difference is your files would show up under the photo tab on your PS3s XMB and not music.

How do you connect a ps3 to a computer

Set up your PS3
Step 1: Make sure your PS3 is connected to the same network (via Ethernet or wireless) as your computer. You can check your connection by going to Settings > Network Settings.
Step 2: Go to Settings > Network Settings > Media Server Connection on your PS3 and set it to "Enabled."

Set up your computer (PC)
Step 1: Download and install the latest version on Windows Media Player.
Step 2: Go to Library > Add to Library and add folders you want your PS3 to access. All personal folders (Photos, Videos, and Music) are selected by default, but if you have media in other folders, add them.
Step 3:. Go to Library > Media Sharing, and check "Share Media." Press "OK," then wait a few moments for your PS3 to show up as one of the devices. Then select it, click "Allow," then "OK."

OR

Set up your computer (Mac)
Step 1: Download and install PS3 Media Server (free). This will allow your PS3 to "see" your Mac.
Step 2: Connect to the same network as your PS3.
Step 3: Go to Navigation/Share Settings and uncheck everything in the Thumbnails section (at the top). Then, at the bottom, add folders you want your PS3 to access. You can choose to add your entire hard drive, but it's helpful to add shortcuts to folders like Music, Videos, and Pictures.
Step 4: Go to Transcoding Settings, and change the Maximum bandwidth to 14 or 15. If you have a very strong network connection, leave it at 0. If you don't have a 5.1 surround sound theater, go to the "Number of audio channels" settings and change it to "Stereo."
Step 5: At the top, hit "Save" and "Restart HTTP Connection."

Stream your media
Step 1: Go back to your PS3, and your computer's name will be listed under the Photos, Videos, or Music tabs. You need to be in the Music section on your PS3 to play music, in the Photos section to see photos, and in the Videos section to play videos. You cannot play copyrighted material.
Here are a few extra tips:
  • When viewing a photo, hit the b_triangle.gif button to view extra options, like starting a slideshow of images in the selected folder.
  • When listening to music, you can keep it playing in the background by hitting the PlayStation (home) button.
  • You can copy music, photos, and videos onto your PS3 hard drive. When viewing a file, hit the b_triangle.gif button and select "Copy."

Stream Sony XR550 AVCHD from PC to Panasonic TC-P50G25 via DLNA with PS3

PS3 DLNA Video-Play MTS/M2TS Videos from Computer to Non-DLNA TV with PlayStation 3
Full Guide to Setup Windows 7 for PS3 with DLNA Streaming to HDTV

The HDTV in my living room is non-DLNA compliant. It is the 50-inch Panasonic VIERA TC-P50G25 Plasma HDTV. Even though my PC is running Windows 7 with WMP 12, the videos could not be streamed to the Plasma TV via DLNA. It is quite inconvenient for home sharing.

When looking for the solution for playing videos from PC to non-DLNA TV, I got to know that I could download my Sony XR550 videos from camcorder to PC, connect PlayStation 3 to HDTV via HDMI cable as the media player - Stream Sony AVCHD from PC to Panasonic via DLNA with PS3. The PS3 is generally used as game console. What ever starts playing will play a second then stop and it take a couple seconds before it will start then play a second stop and we go through this through the whole thing.

To resolve this problem, make sure that UDP protocol is disabled for the Windows Media Player on the client computer. If UDP protocol is disabled, the player connects to streaming content through TCP or HTTP (if these are enabled on the Windows Media Server).

To disable the UDP protocol, follow these steps in the Windows Media Player:

For Windows Media Player version 7.0 and later:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Network tab.
  3. Under Protocols, clear UDP.
For Windows Media Player version 6.4:
  1. On the View menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. Select Streaming Media and click Change.
  4. Under Protocols, clear UDP.

All I want to do is run the playstation thru my computer. Do I have to connect it to the internet to do that?

not internet but your home network.
i'm not sure you can use your playstation through your computer. but you can access your pictures, music, videos that is stored on your computer from your ps3. if you have the latest version of windows media player it makes it easier.

Using Windows Media Player 11 as the server
Open Windows Media Player 11
From the toolbar, select Library then Media Sharing
Check "Share my media"
On the PS3 - Under Video, Photos or Music, select "Scan for media server"
Go back to the PC, and you should see a pop up showing an unknown device trying to connect.
Allow the device, and everything should work.

Cant find a media server on my ps3

make sure your PC and PS3 are networked (you can do this via wireless but using the LAN cable is better if you want to watch films)

You need to set your PC up to be the media server. you will then be able to stream all you music and movies that are on your pc to your PS3

Upgrade your copy of windows media player to 11

once you have done this go to the libary icon. Select sharing and select share with other devices.

Then boot your ps3 up and search for media server

You should see a dialoge box on your telling you a new device want to access. Tell it yes. then you should be able to your view the entire libary.

To access your music etc you always need to make sure media player is running on your pc

Hope this helps.
