Combo drives have 2 lasers inside of them. An IR laser to read CD/VCD and a red laser to read DVD. It sounds like your laser to read DVD discs is dirty or has developed a fault. A replacement drive would be your best option as they are now very cheap and it will resolve the issue quickly.
Hope this helps,

its either its a lens problem or that was how the CD/DVD Drive was made.
There are some drives that doesn't play white face discs, that is, they select disc and don't play all CD's, so maybe yours fall under this category.
How long have you been using your laptop and has it ever played Cd/Vcd's before?
If it plays them before, then it means your drive's lens is weak, but if it has never played them before, then it means that's how the player was made.
Which ever way, you still have an option of replacing the drive if you wish.
You can't burn a DVD movie using a COMBO drive or Compact disc rewriter, change your movie format from DVD to VCD and then try again, I recommend you use nero to make/edit movie and ImgBurn to make ISO image and burn it onto disc.
Two possibilities that are immediately apparent. One, the lens on the
drive is dirty. Stop by a department store and buy a CD/DVD laser lens
cleaner CD and put it in the drive several times, making sure that it
tries to read it each time. This can brush away the debris on the lens
and it may work again. Two, the drive motor or lens assembly (that
moves) has failed. My experience is that these drives have a 2-3 year
life span. Luckily, they are now bargain-priced and you can pick them
up at your local discount store and replace them yourself.
Some models of PIONEER cd players had radio frequency problems that caused them to work on and off. Are you near any radio or braodcast towers? Poorly shielded power supplies cause this as well. A weak laser diode in the pick-up assembly in model runs could be the problem. You might want to Google the model number and see if this is common for these units.
