I need help taking the lid off my whirlpool washer

Bypass the lid lock so it is seen as activated all the time.

There is a small hole that when pushed in will make the washer think the lid is closed. See if something is obstructing that or if it is pushed in.

Bad lid lock activator....try taking some contact spray...and open lid find contact that goes up and down in lid closing area ...spay contact spray then open and close lid 5 times and try it...

Charla, By what you have stated, it sounds like a lid switch failure. I recommend checking the screws for the lid hinge first.The lid has to be closed for the motor to run in the washer. If the lid switch is faulty, it will act as if the lid is open. A quick check you can do is to run a cycle with the lid switch jumped. If the washer operates, the lid switch needs to be replaced.
To jump the lid switch you need to unplug the washer and open the console.Once you have the console open, locate the connector for the lid switch. Place an insulated jumper between the gray and white wires. Not the green it is a ground and will cause a short. After inserting the jumper make sure it will not touch anything metal, plug the washer in. Then start the washer in a cycle, and let it go. If the washer completes the cycle, you need to replace the lid switch. Remove the jumper and order the part. The jumper is only of the test do not continue to operate after test.

First test if it is a problem with the lid switch. There are many YouTube videos on how to take apart the control panel and test the pins with a multimeter. On my washer, the lid switch passed the multimeter test but I did my test below and determined it was still the lid switch that was the problem.
When it gets to the point where the washer is supposed to drain and then spin-rinse but doesn't do anything, open the lid and push down on the lid switch lever with a small solid stick (chopstick, screwdriver, etc..) where the lid switch pin would normally push down on until you hear a click. If it suddenly drains, then the lid switch needs to be replaced. If you're lucky, it's a $6 part on ebay and 15 minutes of your time. If nothing happens, then find the YouTube video on testing the lid switch with a multimeter.

Hi Sarah, there are two screws on each side of the lid holding the shaft for the hinges. Open the lid to access them, You will need an Allen wrench to take them off, after that, just lift the lid up to take it out. Hope this help. Thanks.

Open lid look at corner bottom sides you will see a clip with 2 Phillip head screws. Take screws out pull out clips lid will lift off.
