Re: Hi, my ps3 stopped playing ps3 games but it plays
It will most likely be the hard drive in your PS3 as your games most likely use the hard drive a lot - I would try if you can to take the hard drive out and try and backup the data if you can and then whilst its connected to your desktop run a check disc - you may need to purchase a new hard drive and transfer the data over.
As you can see plenty of guides especially on youtube for replacing the hard drive as for the recovery of the data before you wipe or erase or run a checkdisk on the hard drive you will need a data kit which you can obtain from your computer store or amazon

The Playstation 3 is a wonderful video game console, however, with heavy usage, the laser does eventually burn out. The first signs of the laser starting to burn out is that your game will start freezing during game play. Eventually the game will stop reading altogether (even though movies sometimes still work). Eventually movies will stop working and the whole laser will eventually die.
The following website sells PS3 lasers and also performs repairs:

Hi,This is a common problem on the PS3 unfortunately and is caused by a faulty blue-ray drive. Unit will have to go back to Sony for service. You should try a DVD cleaning disk first to be sure that dirt on the laser lense is not causing the issue. You can also open the case and clean the laser lense with a Q Tip and an alcohol cleaning solution. If you plan on opening the case at any stage please ensure the unit is disconnected from its power supply. If this fails and you are confident with electronics there are several videos on YouTube showing how to replace the drive if you choose to order it and do it yourself.Hope this helps. Please remember to rate my answer. Many Thanks.
YOur PS3 might be overheating, make sure that it is somehwere in the open, like on a desk, or at least has room if its in a cabinet. Also make sure that it is not on a rug, or any other heat conducting amterial such as a bed, rug, or even plastic.
when it happens, give it some time, like 5-10 min. the ps3 is most likely accessing the hard drive, and if it is, shutting down in the middle of it could currupt your hdd. if it doesnt work, even after 10 min, call sony tech support, but if it works fine afterwords, i dont see why it would be neccessary. unless it gets worse, i think you should just turn it on, turn it off after a few min, then back on, and then play.
Try using a can of air to blow out the fan area. Even though its well ventilated it may be full of dust. It sounds like an overheating issue. Also look into aftermarket fan/cooling solutions, that dont plug directly into the PS3 and have there own outlet power plug.
It's a factory defect. I've fixed over 100 PS3's with the same exact problem. Your blu-ray laser went out. You need to contact Sony or if you're in Los Angeles you can contact me. I fix the problem for $120 and within 30 minutes. Sony charges $150+ and takes God knows how long.
