Hi
E18 means you have a mechanical failure it's depend from the zoomunit. If you can fix it by yourself you can clean the small gearbox that is driven the zoom assy sometimes ther is sand or contamination partikels in it.
Otherwise you must replace the zoomunit it's not so expencive.

My Canon Power Shot A80 Digital camera goes ON but only shows the screen name Canon then the lens goes back into off - some sounds come on and then E18 shows in the lower left of a black screen. Help.

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

E18

E18 is the canon fault number for lens error. Is the lens stuck out? does it click when the camera is switched on? Try lightly tapping the lens on a hard surface. This sometimes resets the lens. If all this fails take it to bits! (but watch the flash module as this can give a nasty shock.Big black capacitor) You will see the lens module take the it to bits carefully and re seat the components. I have done a few over the years. It takes about an hour. If you have any more issues contact me.

E 18 problem

Hi,
The dreaded E18 error happens to many Canon cameras.
This error occurs when the lens is mechanically stuck. Sometimes you need it to be serviced and most times you can fix it, but even then it's a good idea to have it serviced soon. The cause to this may be dust, dropping and other mechanical problems.
1. Check if the battery is full
2. Check for visible mechanical problems (obstacles, debris). You may notice the lens is not exactly straight - in this case this is the cause of the problem.
3. Turn the camera off.
4. This needs to be done with gentle force: Take the camera in one hand and with the other gently take each part of the lens and gently move it round in a circular movement. Do this with both sections of the lens. You will hear a little "click" as it pops back in place.
5. Power the camera on.

Hope this helps!

E 18 problem

the E18 means the lens system has a problem. I had it with my S2 and sometimes it worked, sometimes not. Eventually it stopped working. The only solution was sending it to repair, they changed the lens system.

Best Regards
