Then it turns black and E18 comes up before it shuts itself off.
The dreaded E18 error happens to many Canon cameras.
This error occurs when the lens is mechanically stuck. Sometimes you need it to be serviced and most times you can fix it, but even then it's a good idea to have it serviced soon. The cause to this may be dust, dropping and other mechanical problems.
1. Check if the battery is full
2. Check for visible mechanical problems (obstacles, debris). You may notice the lens is not exactly straight - in this case this is the cause of the problem.
3. Turn the camera off.
4. This needs to be done with gentle force: Take the camera in one hand and with the other gently take each part of the lens and gently move it round in a circular movement. Do this with both sections of the lens. You will hear a little "click" as it pops back in place.
5. Power the camera on.
Hope this helps!

I have got the problem E18 with canon ixus 55.
Got a defect camera from ebay, tried to repair: I changed the objektiv.
I had the mechanik controlled by connecting voltage from batery
to the motor. The objekt lens went well, out and in.
But when I put all together, fixed all plugs, controlled everything
and closed the camera, nothing happens. I cannot switch on my camera any more.
There can be a lot of reasons, I agree.
Does anyone have a suggestion, how I can locate the problem?
Thanks for help
Is there any possibility to measure the voltage to
